action

The land of Malveel, an area inhabited by warring nomad clans, is in danger of being conquered by the rising Draikian Empire - commonly known as the dynasty. King Brakus, ruler of the Falcon Clan, succeeds after a long time to peacefully unite several warring tribes and tries to win them over to the fight against the common enemy. However, he is threatened with treason from within his own ranks: Sandros and Riis, his nephews, got in touch with the dynasty in their hunger for power, and their supreme warlord, Gar, and his contortionists instruct them to eliminate Brakus. Brakus 'son Toran meanwhile has a hostile encounter with the beautiful Estra, a sorceress, whose mother Naestra was once murdered by Brakus' father under the direction of his teacher, the magician Lazar-Sa. She gives him a cryptic prophecy in which she promises him a hopeless search.

That same night Brakus is murdered by Gar with Toran's dagger, which Sandros was able to steal secretly, but lying dying Brakus wrestles the promise of his son to visit Lazar-Sa so that his work should not be in vain. Toran is found with his father's body and imprisoned as a murderer; His old master Mak, the leader of a magic bow , frees him, and together the two go in search of the magician, pursued by Gar and his contortionists, who are determined to form a new alliance of the Mallow clans under the falcons prevent, which is why Gar also has Sandros and Riis murdered. Worn out by his escape and his age, Mak hands over the magic bow to his apprentice, but dies in the process in which the bow takes on its new bearer.

Toran manages to seriously injure Gar in a confrontation and wins the attention of the rascal Slant, who joins him without being asked. Although Slant tries to acquire the bow first, he begins to honestly like Toran over time and supports him with his world wisdom. Meanwhile, Estra also goes in search of Lazar-Sa to kill him and thus avenge her mother, and in the process she crosses Toran's own path. In the city of Kamal, the three meet an individual who pretends to be Lazar-Sa and tries to drive the residents out of the area. Toran, Estra and Slant are asked by the city council to remove the threat, and just to find answers to their search, they accept the task and travel to the Endworld Canyon, the hiding place of the wizard. Shortly after their departure, however, Gar arrives at Kamal, where he can take up the trail of Toran again.

In the Endworld Gorge the three meet Lazar-Sa, but quickly discover that he is only a magical simulacrum . He was driven by Rega, a former slave from Kamal who met Lazar-Sa and who gave him a magic stone and glove to take revenge for the humiliation of his slavery. Rega tells them where Lazar-Sa was last, but then commits suicide with the stone now that his identity is out. Gar, who followed Toran, picks up the glove and challenges Toran. During the battle, however, the power of the stone, made dangerously unstable by a shot of Toran, destroys the End World Canyon; Toran, Estra and Slant can barely escape.

Estra then separates from her temporary companions in order to pursue her own path to Lazar-Sa. Toran and Slant are on their way back to Kamal when they receive a message from Lazar-Sas promising Toran to lead him to a higher destiny if he manages to free the wizard from his captivity in the end world . But the two do not yet know that Gar survived the catastrophe in the Endworld Gorge and continues to strive for Toran's death ...

background

  • Originally, The Magic Arch was produced as a pilot for a planned NBC TV series . However, there was no continuation. This also explains the open end, namely that Lazar-Sa was not found and the search for him is declared the goal.
  • The film was released in German-speaking countries on December 17, 1981 and has been shown several times on television. The film was also released on VHS and was released on DVD on April 29, 2011 by Koch Media.
  • The soundtrack, composed by the synthesizer specialist Ian Underwood , is considered to be one of the first completely electronically implemented soundtracks.
  • Compared to Der Drachentöter (1981), for example , the technical possibilities of the early 1980s were not fully exploited. The mask effects in the depiction of the snake warriors are quite successful . John Goodwin ( The Thing from Another World , Men in Black ) played a key role .
  • George Kennedy was dubbed in the German version by Joachim Cadenbach , Kabir Bedi's narrator was Christian Rode .
  • Leading actor Lane Caudell named his son Toran, born in 1982, after the title character.

criticism

"Adventurous fantasy confrontations between good and evil in comic style, questionable in their glorification of violence."
