Sechew Powell (born June 6, 1979 in New York City ) is a former American professional boxer.

Amateur career

Sechew Powell comes from Brooklyn , boxed as an amateur under the name "Dark Horse" and won 149 of 156 amateur fights. He was American junior welterweight champion in 1997, National Golden Gloves Champion in light middleweight in 2000 , and American light middleweight champion in 2001.

He also won the 1998 American Boxing Classic tournament in Milwaukee , the bronze medal at the 1999 National Golden Gloves, the silver medal at the 2000 US Championships, the gold medal at the US Challenge in Lake Placid and the bronze medal at the US Championships 2002.

In 2000 he started at the US Olympic qualification (Olympic Trials) in Florida, but was disqualified in the semifinals in the fight against Sergio Mora for unsportsmanlike conduct.

On the international level he won the 2nd Anwar Chowdhry Junior Tournament in Baku in 1997 and started at the 2001 World Championships in Belfast . After victories against Dmitri Nowitski from Ukraine and Lukas Wilaschek from Germany, he lost to Damián Austin from Cuba in the quarter-finals .

Professional career

In 2002 he turned pro and won his first 20 fights in a row, 12 of them prematurely. He defeated, among others, Jonathan Taylor (3-0), Sergio Meléndez (5-0) and George Armenta (12-3). On May 6, 2005 he won against the undefeated Cornelius Bundrage (21-0) after a double knockdown by tKo in the first round. On August 25 of the same year he also defeated Santiago Samaniego (36-9) (World Cup challenger of the WBA / WBO ) by tKo in the third round. After winning points against Archak Termeliksetian (15-1) and IBF World Championship challenger Robert Frazier (31-6), he won in June 2006 by tKo in the tenth round against the eventual North American champion Willie Lee (14-4).

In his 21st professional fight on August 5, 2006, he lost on points at Madison Square Garden to ex-IBF world champion Kassim Ouma (24-2). But he defeated in his next fight on February 17, 2007 Ishe Smith (18-1) unanimously on points and was also able to defeat Terrance Cauthen (32-3) and Kevin Finley (12-0) prematurely. On June 11, 2008 he lost by tKo in the seventh round against Deandre Latimore (18-1), but won the rematch on points.

On June 25, 2011 he boxed again against Cornelius Bundrage (30-4), who had meanwhile become world champion of the IBF. Powell, now number 1 in the IBF world challenger rankings, had to admit defeat on points this time around. Also in the fight against Cory Spinks (38-6) on January 28, 2012, he suffered a point defeat. His last fight for the time being was on June 1, 2012 against Gabriel Rosado (19-5) and lost to tKo in the ninth round.

On August 2, 2014 he returned to the ring, but lost on points to Dmitri Michailenko (16-0).
