The Sedum album ( Sedum album ), and White Stonecrop called, is a species of the genus Sedum (Sedum) in the family of the Crassulaceae (Crassulaceae). This species is very rich in shape.

description

The white sedum plant is a hibernating green, lawn-forming Chamaephyte that reaches heights of growth of 8 to 20 centimeters. The stems are bare, and many do not bloom. The alternate leaves are 7 to 20 millimeters long, semi-stemmed, arched on both sides, elongated-lanceolate and protruding. Their color ranges from gray-green to red-brown.

The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry . The usually five petals are 2 to 4 millimeters long, blunt and white to pale pink in color with a red central nerve.

The flowering period extends from June to September.

The species has chromosome numbers 2n = 32 or 64.

Occurrence

The white sedum plant occurs in southern and central Europe , southern Scandinavia , Turkey and Armenia, also in the Caucasus, in northwest Africa in dry rock crevices, on rocky and gravel corridors and on sandy and stony ruderal places . It is also often overgrown from culture. It is an order character of the rock grass and rock band societies, the Sedo-Scleranthetalia, but also occurs in societies of the classes Asplenietea trichomanis or Festuco-Brometea. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises to around 1800 meters above sea level.

Taxonomy

The scientific name Sedum album was first published in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum .

Food plant

The white sedum plant is used as a caterpillar forage plant for various butterflies . These include in particular the following ways: Scolitantides Orion ( Scolitantides Orion ) and Red Apollo ( Parnassius apollo ). The white sedum plant was also eaten by humans during times of starvation. The above-ground parts without the roots are conditionally suitable for consumption; they are slightly toxic and can cause vomiting.

use

The white sedum plant is widely used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens , borders, planters and heather beds.

There are several types (selection):

  • 'Murale': the leaves are brownish red
  • 'Coral Carpet': the leaves are green in summer and bronze-red in winter
