Nautical book
The seafaring book was an identity document and served, among other things, to identify the owner and, in certain countries, also as proof of pension claims. It has been replaced by the seafarers' pass .
Germany
Since the new version of the Passport Ordinance in 2007, German seafaring books were no longer passport substitute papers .
Since the Maritime Labor Act came into force in 2013, the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency has been issuing seafarers' identity cards instead of the seafaring book . It serves as proof of professional activity in shipping and is also not a passport substitute or official proof of identity. Existing seafaring books may continue to be used for this purpose until May 31, 2019 through a transitional arrangement ( Section 64 (6) of the Seafarers' Capability Ordinance ). In some countries such as Hong Kong , the submission of a German seafaring book is still a prerequisite for uncomplicated shore leave for seafarers.
In addition, the shipowners issue service certificates in accordance with the International Maritime Labor Act instead of an entry in the seafaring book .
possession
Every person who belonged to the ship's crew had to have a seafaring book in which every fitting and signing off is recorded. It is also a record of the social security periods you have performed together with the social security number certified by the seaman's office . Furthermore, visas and notes are entered. Seafaring books are numbered consecutively. The first nautical book to be handed out is given the number 1.
Information in the nautical log
On page 2 of the document is the certified photo of the owner, together with the certificate from the seaman's office that the photo shows the person depicted. The description of the person is on page 3.

For drafting on a ship ( hiring ) the following data was entered from page 12:
- Service position , ship name
- Distinguishing signal of the ship
- Measurement of the ship
- Power of the propulsion system
- Name and address of the shipping company
- home port
- Day of commencement of work
- Authentication by the responsible seaman's office, embassy or consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany
Sampling
The following data was entered from page 13 onwards for sampling a ship:
- Function on board
- Ship name
- Travel area (e.g. medium or long voyage )
- Period of travel (from ... to ...)
- total travel time in months and days
- Vacation entitlement
- Place and day of sampling
- Signature of the captain or another authorized representative
The sampling was certified on page 13 by the seaman's office.
