Sailing instructors are people who teach sailing students the theory and practice of sailing .

Leisure / tourism sector

Sailing instructors work voluntarily in sailing clubs or are self-employed entrepreneurs or employees of sailing schools and teach seamanship , navigation , sea ​​weather and shipping law there . The aim is to enable sailing students to independently drive a sport boat ( sailing boat , motor boat ) and, if necessary, to acquire a certificate of competency for sport boat drivers .

Training in Germany

In Germany , some associations issue sailing instructor licenses. The sailing instructor license certifies that the owner has a level of training established by the association.

The German Sailing Association (DSV) issues three different sailing instructor licenses:

A holder of a DSV sailing instructor license may call himself a DSV sailing instructor.

VDS

The Association of German Sport Boat Schools (VDS) trains VDS sailing instructors. The training for the VDS sailing instructor license was redesigned in 2013 and based on the English model for skipper qualification. The training is divided into various modules, which can be freely selected depending on the orientation and previous knowledge of the applicant. The basic theory module is binding for all seminar participants. In a weekend seminar, basic knowledge of methodology and didactics and the preparation of a teaching sample are imparted here. After the basic module, the module dinghy / small keel yacht can be selected , for the pure motorboat instructor the module motorboat or for the yacht instructor the module yacht . The seminars on the modules dinghy / small keel yacht and motor boat are held in the form of a one-week seminar with a subsequent examination. VDWS

The Association of German Water Sports Schools e. V. trains certified dinghy sailing instructors (VdWS) . The training consists of an eight-day seminar over 50 teaching hours and a four-week internship over 100 teaching hours. In over 30 countries there are over 540 water sports stations available to the 3600 members.

Training in Switzerland

In Switzerland, as in Germany, the sailing instructor is not recognized as a profession. However, training courses are offered by the Federal Office for Sport (BASPO) as part of Jugend + Sport .

Youth + Sport

After a six-day leadership course, you are entitled to train young people on behalf of Jugend + Sport (Y + S). Good sailing knowledge is required to attend the leader course. The minimum age is 16 years. Y + S leaders must attend a module from the Y + S advanced training program every two years. Attending and passing an education or training course extends the duration of all valid manager approvals by two years.

VSMS

The Association of Swiss Motorboat and Sailing Schools (VSMS) offers training to become a sailing instructor.
