The SHS

The Sporthochseeschifferschein (SHS) is one of the official sports boat licenses in Germany for driving yachts as well as training and traditional ships "with a propulsion engine" or "with a propulsion engine and under sail" in worldwide voyages (all seas). The SHS is compulsory for the commercial use of sport boats in the worldwide travel area. So you need it when you leave the waters near the coast (see section Sportseeschifferschein). In addition, additional crew requirements are stipulated for worldwide, commercial travel. These arise again from Appendix 4 to SeeSpbootV.

requirements

  • Age at least 18 years
  • Possession of the Sportseeschifferschein
  • Proof of 1,000 nautical miles on yachts in the sea area after acquiring the Sportseeschifferschein as a skipper, coskipper or guard (in contrast to the SSS, a deputy guard is not sufficient). The test can be taken with proof of 500 nautical miles, the certificate is then issued when proof of the missing miles.

exam

  • Written theory test in three sub-subjects
    • Navigation (including astronomical navigation ) (150 minutes)
    • Shipping law (including international maritime law) (45 minutes)
    • Meteorology (including tropical cyclones ) (45 minutes)
  • Practice: handling the sextant (approx. 10 minutes)
    • Explanation / review of the three common mistakes
    • Performing a vertical angle measurement
  • Oral exam: handling yachts (approx. 15 minutes)
    • technical and nautical aspects of managing yachts
    • Driving in heavy weather
    • Behavior in areas prone to cyclones

Basics

The DSV issues around 100 SHS certificates every year across Germany on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport .

International comparability

In principle, the SHS corresponds roughly to the British Yachtmaster Ocean , although the requirements for acquiring the RYA Yachtmaster certificates are higher.

In the high seas area, Switzerland only knows one ticket, the high seas pass (HSA). Like the German Sporthochseeschifferschein (SHS), it also enables you to travel around the world and requires - in addition to a demanding and comprehensive theoretical test - evidence of at least 1000 nautical miles of practical experience on ocean-going vessels. Only the field of astronavigation is not queried in the HSA exam, compared to the German SHS.

Here, however , the English Yachtmaster Ocean goes much further, whereby a self-planned ocean passage as a skipper or security guard, during the astronavigation was carried out and documented, is an examination requirement.

Although the Swiss HSA largely corresponds to the requirements of the German SHS, yachts flying the Swiss flag may not be used professionally.

validity

The SHS is valid for yachts and traditional ships in worldwide voyage (§ 1 I 3 SportSeeSchiffVO).

  • If it is a yacht (sport boat), the crew size is, however, according to Section 2 I 1 SeeSpbootVO limited to 12 people. If the ship is approved for more than 12 people, it is no longer a pleasure craft, so the certificates of competency intended for pleasure craft are no longer valid.
  • If it is a traditional ship , the SHS enables ships to be operated worldwide up to 25 m in length, even if they take more than 12 people on board. (In addition, the SHS owner can operate a traditional ship up to 55 m, provided he can prove the additional entries in the SHS specified in the SeeSpbootVO .)
  • Further restrictions regarding the manning of ships result from Appendix 4 to § 15 II SeeSpbootVO ("driving time" maximum 10 hours within 24 hours)

Additional entry traditional boatman

In the SHS, the additional entry qualification to operate traditional ships or qualification as machinist of traditional ships can be noted (so-called traditional ship license ). This certificate of competence is valid for traditional ships with a length of more than 25 and less than 55 meters. The crew may exceed 25 people.

International certificate

All sport ship licenses include the international certificate in accordance with Resolution No. 40 of the United Nations Economic Commission International Certificate of Competence . With the help of this certificate, drivers of pleasure boats can prove their qualifications abroad. The driver's licenses have been extended to include a third inside page. The SHS therefore includes the "International Certificate E" (IZE).

predecessor

The official predecessor of the Sporthochseeschifferschiff was the Sporthochseeschifferzeugnis . Until 1994 it was the compulsory certificate of proficiency for commercial recreational shipping. The Sporthochseeschifferzeugnis can be transferred to the Sporthochseeschifferschein. The content of the DSV- C certificate was similar to that of the Sporthochseeschifferschein. C-certificates issued before January 1, 1994 can be converted into the Sporthochseeschifferschein.
