Segression is an Australian groove and nu-metal band from Wollongong , which was founded in 1990 under the name Eezee , disbanded in 2003 and has been active again since 2010.

history

The band was formed in 1990 under the name Eezee by singer Lloyd Burton, drummer Jamie McGarva and guitarist Zod. In 1993 the self-financed EP Matter of Attitude was released . Guitarist Chris Sellin and bassist Christiaan Rand can be heard as additional members. About twelve months later, Burton left the cast. Then Rand also took over the vocal post. A little later, guitarist James Broadbent and drummer John Buckley joined them. Since the style had changed a lot, the band tried to withdraw all copies of the first EP. In 1995, Warhead Records released their debut album Rise from Darkness , before going on tour with Deicide , Machine Head and Morbid Angel .

The band was renamed Segression on New Years Day 1996. Broadbent left the group a short time later and was replaced by Shane Partridge. Since the work on the debut album had already begun, Broadbent can still be heard in several songs. The album was released in 1996 under the name LIA on Oracle Records . The group received a handwritten letter from Jello Biafra about the album, in which he congratulated the band on the album. To promote it, the band held various regional concerts, including playing with Fear Factory in August 1996 and with Strapping Young Lad in 1997 . In mid-1997, the second album followed with Fifth of the Fifth . This was followed by other appearances, including together with Mortal Sin . Towards the end of the year the band took part in the Metal for the Brain . In 1998, Segression accompanied Ozzy Osbourne on his tour through Australia. Osbourne himself had requested Segression take part in the tour. Towards the end of the year she was again active live with Strapping Young Lad. After the drummer Buckley had been replaced by Adrian "Red" Herbert, the band again took part in Metal for the Brain. In 1999 the group was hardly active live because they were working on their third album. Towards the end of the year, the contract was announced with Roadrunner Records ' sub-label Dark Carnival Records . After a US tour with Slipknot in February 2000 , the third album Smile was released . Since the sales figures were rather disappointing compared to the two previous albums, Roadrunner Records separated from the group after less than a year. After their intention to participate in the Metal-for-the-Brain-Festival in 2000 became public, the band later withdrew their commitment and announced one last tour through Australia before moving to the USA. In early 2001 the band settled in Chicago , where they made occasional appearances and wrote new songs. However, in May she returned to Australia to join the Pantera and Corrosion of Conformity tour . Herbert left the cast in July. With the replacement Keith Owen, work began on the next album, which was released in June 2002 self-titled and financed. After that, the band was seen at the Overcranked Festival in Brisbane that same month . Segression continued their touring activity for the remainder of the year. In the second half of 2003 it was announced that the activity of the band had been discontinued until further notice. The members, including bassist Michael Caruana then the band dedicated to Side Effect X .

In 2010 Rand, Herbert and Partridge reformed the band, after which it went on tour through Australia together with Fozzy towards the end of the year . At the beginning of the following year, Riot! Records published the album Never Dead . After numerous appearances, Partridge left the cast, whereupon Chris Sellin returned. In mid-2014, the drummer Herbert was replaced by Adam Bunnell, before the album Painted in Blood was released on Murder Machine Records shortly afterwards . In their career, the band also performed with Cradle of Filth and Soulfly, among others .

style

According to Brian Giffin in his Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal , the band initially played a mixture of hard rock and sleaze rock under the name . With the first line-up changes the style changed to Thrash Metal influenced by Death Metal . From 1996 to 2000 Segression was one of the most important metal bands on the east coast of Australia. Segression initially played Groove Metal in the style of Machine Head, before turning to Nu Metal from the album Smile on. Joel McIver assigned the group to Nu Metal in his book The Next Generation of Rock & Punk Nu Metal . Fifth of the Fifth promoted the group to the top of the Australian Nu-Metal scene. Colin McNamara from themetalforge.com wrote in his review of Never Dead that it was a mixture of groove and nu-metal or Pantera and Rage Against the Machine . The singing is aggressive, but is often interrupted by clear vocals. Occasionally, similarities to Slipknot can be seen, although segression is not so aggressive. There is also rapping several times on the album . Funk influences can also be heard in the songs . Overall, the songs are designed to be varied, so that there are no strong similarities to one another. Arielle J of killyourstereo.com stated that Painted in Blood is suitable for fans of Pantera and Machine Head. He especially noticed the emotional and intense vocal spectrum. There were also breakdowns on the album every now and then .
