geography

The municipality of Segura is located in the east of the district, about 30 km from the district town of Idanha-a-Nova, and 56 km east of the district capital Castelo Branco . The Rio Erges border river separates the municipality from Spain.

history

The origins of the place are not certain, but traces show a settlement already at the time of the Roman occupation. The place has been Portuguese since 1282. Its city rights ( Foral ) were renewed by King Manuel I in 1510 . Until 1836 the place was the seat of an independent district, and since then has belonged to Idanha-a-Nova.

Segura first gained notoriety when his mayor Maria de Lurdes Garcia Lavado Sobreiro and her husband were shot dead by a local building contractor in June 2012 and the sensational event was reported across the country.

On September 29, 2013 the municipalities of Segura and Zebreira were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Zebreira e Segura .

Culture and sights

The Segura Bridge

The bridge of Segura, over today's border river Erges, was originally built by the Romans and was part of the road from Mérida to Viseu . Since then, it has been changed and redesigned several times and is now a listed building. Various religious buildings , the castle complex, fountains, mansions , and the stake (Pelourinho) from the 16th century are listed in the community, along with other public buildings.
