Selig Scheuermann (born October 27, 1873 or March 13, 1874 in Binau , † March 21, 1935 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German chasan (cantor), singer and teacher.

Life

From 1902 Selig Scheuermann taught future chasanim at the Karlsruhe teachers' seminar, and from 1903 to 1906 he was also an instructor for cantor training courses. Selig Scheuermann became the first cantor at the new Westend synagogue in Frankfurt in 1910 and sang at its inauguration. In 1926 he became chief cantor there.

Scheuermann published a compilation of synagogal music. It was entitled The Divine Chants of the Israelites for the Year and was published by J. Kauffmann in Frankfurt in 1912 and 1926 . It is a textbook for aspiring cantors. In his own words, Scheuermann endeavored to "convey the venerable Chasonus in a way that [...] meets all the requirements of our modern times in musical and aesthetic terms." possible. The chants are notated for a single voice, the Hebrew text is given in Latin script.

Selig Scheuermann married Pauline Hobach around 1899; the marriage resulted in two daughters and a son. Son Siegfried was born on December 20, 1910 in Frankfurt. The son was a rabbi in Freiburg im Breisgau from 1936 to 1938 and from 1937 also in Bühl (Offenburg) . In 1938 he was imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp . Later he was able to emigrate to the USA and died soon after in North Carolina .
