Sellenbüren (noble family)

Coat of arms of Konrad von Seldenbüren (turned)

The barons of Sellenbüren (also Seldenbüren ) were a noble family in the canton of Zurich named after the village of Sellenbüren . Presumably they did not have their ancestral castle on Sellenbüren Castle , which does not appear in medieval sources, but on the Uetliburg .

The family rarely appears in the sources, although it must have been a significant gender. All three well-known barons of Sellenbüren generously donated goods and rights in the Reppisch Valley and the surrounding area to monasteries. It can therefore be assumed that they descended from a noble family who owned large estates from the Limmat Valley to central Switzerland. A relationship between the gentlemen from Sellenbüren and those from Regensberg is conceivable .

Barons of Sellenbüren

  • Reginbert von Sellenbüren served in the army of Emperor Otto I. In the war against Bavaria in 936 he lost a hand and, according to rather uncertain sources, withdrew to St. Blasien in the Black Forest, where he is said to have founded the St. Blasien monastery . He bequeathed goods to him in Sellenbüren, Stallikon , Urdorf , Birmensdorf and Bonstetten . Reginbert died on December 29, 962 or 964 in St. Blasien, where he is buried. Reginbert's Catholic feast day is December 29th (the day of his death).
  • Heinrich von Sellenbüren was probably Reginbert's brother. In 1092 he donated goods to the Muri monastery in Rohrdorf and goods to the St. Blasien monastery (Black Forest) . He may have been one of the founders of the latter.
  • Konrad von Sellenbüren was probably Heinrich's son and had the Engelberg monastery built on his estate in Engelberg in 1122 , to which he bequeathed his property in Engelbergertal, Zugerland and between Reuss and Albis . According to tradition, he later entered the monastery himself. He was murdered on May 2, 1126. This presumably meant that the Barons von Sellenbüren became extinct.
