Semele androgyna , even climbing Mäusedorn called, is a species of the genus Semele and belongs to the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae).

Vegetative characteristics
Semele androgyna is an evergreen shrub that climbs up to the top of the trees and reaches a length of up to 10 meters. Young twigs are between 15 and 30 centimeters long and bear the two-line, leaf-like phyllocladia . The shape is ovate or elongated-lanceolate, partly lobed. The surface is shiny and the consistency is leathery.
Generative characteristics
Semele androgyna is dioecious separate sexes ( diocesan ). Two to six cream-yellow flowers are grouped in cymes . The flowers, like the reddish berries , are on the edge of the phyllocladia in specimens from the western Canary Islands. In the variety Semele androgyna var. Gayae , which occurs on Gran Canaria , the flowers mainly develop on the surface of the phyllocladia. The flowering period extends from November to April.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.
Occurrence
Semele androgyna is common in the Canary Islands with the exception of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and also in Madeira . It grows in laurel forests at altitudes of 300 to 1000 meters.
Systematics
The genus Semele was founded in 1844 by Karl Sigismund Kunth and is named after Semele , the mother of Dionysus .

It only occurs in Madeira.
