Semih Tezcan (born December 3, 1942 in Mersin , † September 14, 2017 in Istanbul ) was a German-Turkish Turkologist .

Career

Tezcan studied linguistics (including Turkish studies) in Ankara , Hamburg and Göttingen . From 1967 to 1971 he did his doctorate in Göttingen on the subject of The Uyghur Insadi-Sūtra (1974) with Gerhard Doerfer. From 1971 to 1984 he taught and researched at the University of Ankara, Faculty of Language, History and Geography (Dil ve Tarih-Corafya). From 1984 to 2008 he worked in Bamberg at the university there as a lecturer at the chair for Turkish language, history and culture and worked with Klaus Kreiser and Ingeborg Baldauf , among others . In 2002 he also took over the management of the “ Turfan Research ” project at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , for which he had been active since 1994. In 2006 he was awarded the highest science award from the Turkish Academy of Sciences. After retiring in Bamberg, he continued to teach at Bilkent University in Ankara from 2008 to 2016 and carried out extensive research on Evliyâ Çelebi with his wife, Nuran Tezcan, and the American Turkologist Robert Dankoff (Chicago) . He was a member of the Turkish UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

Most recently he was in charge of the edition of the History and Etymological Dictionary of Turkey-Turkish by the renowned Austrian Turkologist Andreas Tietze (born 1914) for the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA).

Numerous scientific papers and books come from Tezcan. He made special contributions to the Turkic language Chalaj , which he researched in Iran from the 1970s and which is now considered extinct.

Tezcan suffered a heart attack on board an airplane in September 2017, from which he died at the age of 74.
