Semp Russ

Sempronius E. "Semp" Russ (born April 16, 1878 in De Soto Parish , Louisiana , † March 12, 1978 in San Antonio , Texas ) was an American tennis player .

biography

Russ graduated from the University of Texas , where he was a football quarterback on the college team from 1898 to 1900. He also studied at Tulane University for a while, but ultimately graduated with a law degree in Texas. He worked as a lawyer, but was also interested in medicine, which is why he founded the Semp Russ Foundation , which raised money to equip the Texas Medical School in San Antonio.

In tennis, Semp was able to show 15 Texas championship titles - combined in singles and doubles. He also won the Southwestern Championship three times. He also took part in the tennis competition at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis . In the individual , he defeated Douglas Turner and Hugh Jones quite clearly after a bye at the beginning , before he was defeated by Alphonzo Bell in the quarterfinals in two sets. In doubles , he competed alongside Charles Cresson . They lost after a victory at the beginning of the eventual Olympic champions Edgar Leonard and Beals Wright , but were able to win a set.

Russ died in San Antonio a few days before his 100th birthday in 1978.
