Transmitter Clarkestown ( Irish Baile Uí Chléirigh ) is a long wave transmitter in County Meath in the Central Irish Plain of the Republic of Ireland , which operates on the frequency 252 kHz with 300 kW transmission power. The transmitter is located approximately 3.5 km east of the village of Summerhill , in a field in Clarkstown on the R156 regional road. A 248-meter-high, ground-insulated, base-fed steel truss mast serves as the transmitting antenna.

history

The transmission system for long-wave broadcasting, built in 1988, served until December 20, 2001 to broadcast the Atlantic 252 program , a cooperation between RTL and Raidió Teilifís Éireann . Today, the RTÉ Radio 1 program is broadcast on the long wave frequency of 252 kHz in amplitude modulation (AM) with a transmission power of 100 kW during the day and 300 kW at night. In 2007, the two original transmitters from Varian Associates were replaced by a single fully transistorized 300 kW TRAM 300L transmitter built by Transradio Sendersysteme Berlin .

On October 27, 2014, the transmitter was supposed to be switched off due to the low number of users, which does not justify the high operating costs. The shutdown was postponed until January 19, 2015, later to 2017 , after protests by the Catholic Churches in Ireland (whose services are broadcast over long wave) and by people in the neighboring United Kingdom , after opening hours are initially to be reduced in 2016. The program is to be distributed over long distances instead via the Internet.

The transmission mast with a height of 248 meters is a guyed steel framework mast with a triangular cross-section, which is isolated from the earth. The original transmitter consisted of two 300 kW Continental transistor transmitters, which were supplied by the Californian electronics company Varian Associates from Dallas , USA. The ground around the mast was lined with copper to improve conductivity.
