The broadcast without a name (SoN) is an unconventional television broadcast by the ORF , characterized by its thematic plot and associative picture contributions, accompanied by a critical, sometimes (also self-) ironic to cynical text . More or less clearly associative, very short film excerpts from one second to around ten seconds were shown for individual terms. It is usually difficult for the audience to see all the representations. Often sentences and / or images trigger associations and further chains of thought, while others have already followed.

Emergence

David Schalko and Fred Schreiber were the inventors of the innovative concept, which was declared a genre of its own by the European Broadcasting Union in 2002 . Other creative authors of the show are the cabaret artists Martin Puntigam and Clemens Haipl (also a third of Project X ) as well as the designers Sebastian Brauneis , Marie Kreutzer , Leopold Lummerstorfer and Thomas Grusch. David Schalko is also the director and conceptualist of Sunshine Airlines and Kupetzky , and he directed Dorfers Donnerstalk with Alfred Dorfer . Fred Schreiber is the presenter at FM4 and singer of the band The False Friends . From October 17, 2002 to April 26, 2007, the now successful show ran almost every week and enjoyed a steadily growing fan base. In 2003 the then completely new television concept was awarded the Austrian TV television award Romy .

Charisma and fan contact

The program was shown as part of the Thursday night program. After the third season, which ended in January 2005, there was a creative break. Fans suspected that the show had stopped, but remained in the dark due to the lack of an official statement. From October 6, 2005, the ORF broadcast further episodes of the SoN. The 75th program was broadcast on October 13th. Another break was taken on March 16, 2006. A continuation of the show, up to at least the 100th show, was promised by the creators themselves in the last show broadcast and at a "festival without a name". A "festival without a name" (FoN for short) is a gathering of SoN fans in a location chosen by the makers. The authors, who are present and ready for an open exchange of ideas with the fans, present their latest work - usually with a one-minute “lead” before the official ORF broadcast. The FoN takes place every first Thursday of the month of broadcast in a Viennese location, which is announced a few days beforehand by Fred Schreiber in the forum of the SoN website.

Since October 5, 2006 the program has been broadcast on ORF 1 again. However, ORF reduced the planned 14 episodes to five. The 100th program was broadcast on December 28th. The anniversary was celebrated with a special that satirically "looked behind the scenes" in small game scenes. The broadcast without a name also took part in the ORF's main focus on climate change in the week from 22nd to 27th January 2007. On 25th January the broadcast accordingly contained associations that had to do with weather, climate and climate change in the narrower and broader sense.

The broadcast without a name was set on April 26, 2007 with the 114th episode and a repetition of the first episode after five years. Just two days later, fans initiated the “Petition Without a Name” to reintroduce the show.

The last episodes reached 130,000 (April 12), 146,000 (April 19) and 139,000 / 115,000 viewers (two episodes on April 26), which corresponded to a market share of 9 to 12 percent and thus always behind the figures for the other programs on Thursday night ( Die 4 da reached 224,000 to 286,000 viewers with 11 to 15 percent market share in the same period; Dorfer's Donnerstalk reached 342,000 viewers and 13 percent market share on April 26th).

On July 26, 2007, the voice of the off sounded in the program Willkommen Österreich, also produced by David Schalko, in a nearly five-minute contribution on the subject of water.

On July 17, 2012 it was officially confirmed that from September 2012 12 new episodes of the program will be shown on ORF , which also happened from September 18, 2012.

The logo of the program without a name was the percent sign % resembling icon. It was originally intended to serve as a title, but there were hurdles in the way, and so the program was given a title derived from this fact. Initial attempts to rename the program through the participation of viewers failed, so the program finally kept its name.

concept

With the skilful use of film clips, pieces of music, interviews with celebrities and individual texts, the authors create a new form of narrative technique similar to a free chain of associations . A (never visible) narrator guides the viewer through the show and tells his thoughts on certain events or things. The topics dealt with were current daily events at home and abroad as well as world historical events from society, politics, science, culture, etc. While the voiceover (spoken by Fred Schreiber) formed the main part of the program, associated images were shown - from straightforward support through associative wordplay and interpretations suggestive to contrasting or counteracting in the most varied of ways. The temporarily appearing inserts (names, alternative names, dates and facts, quotations, etc.) complete the flood of information with additional comments or set up their own plot.

Audiovisual elements

Some of the film excerpts were shot by the author, and some of the excerpts from the ORF archive material and well-known films. The celebrities (often musicians and bands) are interviewed about the topics covered and can also contribute new thoughts, as can the inserts.

The broadcast on the Internet

The first and only contact point on the Internet is the unofficial page without a name, with overviews of all programs, screenshots of inserts and the like. There is no official page managed by the ORF, nor is there an ORF link to the unofficial page. Their forum is also frequented by the creators of the show without a name.

At times, the episodes of the program were offered directly for download on the Internet. After the site was closed by ORF, the site was relaunched with eDonkey links.
