Serge Raynaud de la Ferrière (1930)

Serge Raynaud de la Ferrière (SRF) (born January 16, 1916 in Paris , † December 27, 1962 in Nice ) was a French astrologer and founder of a new religious movement, the Great Universal Brotherhood .

Life

Serge Raynaud de la Ferrière was born under the name Serge Justinien Raynaud. As an adult he added “de la Ferrière” as a pseudonym to his name . On the websites of his organization it is claimed that he is of a count's origin. He lost his mother very early and was raised by relatives. His father, the Belgian Georges Luis Constantine Raynaud, was a technical draftsman who was married several times. Therefore he has a half-brother named André Raynaud Hilaire (* 1937). Some aunts report that he attended St. Luk's School in Brussels as a child. He served in the Army from July 31, 1935 to December 27, 1940.

He was interested in esotericism and yoga , especially the prophecies of the second coming of Christ and the new Aquarian age . In 1944 he married Louise Baudin (1912–2013) and they both worked as manufacturers and distributors of soaps and perfumes. Adrienne Victorine Louise Baudin was a daughter of Adolphe Eugene Beaudin and Louise Augustin André.

After meeting a person named Soun-Woun-Koun in Paris in 1946 and comparing his date of birth with that of Jesus , he came to the conclusion that he was the expected Messiah and that he should announce the arrival of the New Age in South America . He began to write the book “The Great Contributions” with his written teachings, which were to be followed by 97 other books.

After seeing a film about Machu Picchu , he sailed to America with his wife in November 1947. They stopped over in Guatemala to visit relatives of Louise and arrived in Caracas on January 17, 1948.

The Great Universal Brotherhood

In Venezuela, Serge Raynaud founded the Great Universal Brotherhood (GUB), a humanitarian organization that has two axes. The first includes the order with the religious aspects. This includes a separate calendar, a hierarchy with ordained priests and degrees of initiation, a temple, ashrams, yoga studios and a transmission of the teachings through master-disciple submission.

The second axis of the brotherhood is the mission, a kind of social welfare for the population. Serge Raynaud is considered a pioneer for the introduction of yoga in South America. His first followers were José Manuel Estrada, Juan Víctor Mejías, Alfonso Gil Colmenares and David Ferriz Olivares.

to travel

new York

In 1949, Serge Raynaud decided to travel to New York with a few followers. The aim of the trip was to participate in a spiritual conference. Since he could not get a visa to return to Venezuela, his wife decided to visit him in New York. She traveled from Caracas to New York without his consent, where she surprised her husband with a lover, which led to the judicial separation. Newspapers such as the Daily News and New York World-Telegram and Sun reported on the case.

To Europe and the Far East

In February 1950, Serge Raynaud left his wife and traveled to Europe with one of his followers. He visited Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris and traveled further east. For a while he lived in India, Ceylon and Tibet. In Burma, he claimed that he was recognized as a Bodhisattva by an "oracle man" and a delegate from the Dalai Lama .

Australia and India, return to Nice

During his travels he wrote several books. He painted pictures using different techniques. In October 1950 he traveled to Australia, where he tried to establish a branch of his movement. On his return he traveled to Norway, Belgium and England. In 1952 he made trips to Oceania and Japan, about which there is no precise information. On March 5, 1953, he visited India again, where he stayed for nine months and opened an art exhibition. The return to Nice took place in 1955. He died in 1962 at the age of 46.

Academic degrees and esoteric diplomas

Serge Raynaud presented a résumé in his works, letters and in various newspaper interviews. Starting with a Belgian Prix Ernest Rousille , with which he was supposedly awarded the best European student at the age of 12, and for whose existence there is no evidence, the other titles and awards that he lists in his autobiography are also entirely made up. The same goes for his list of esoteric titles. He claimed he had earned the following titles: Biology Teacher, Doctor of Science, Doctor of Social Science, Doctor of Psychology, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Theology. He also listed honorary memberships of more than 20 organizations. One of his adepts ascribes the following esoteric titles allegedly granted to him: Sat Guru, Bodhisattva , Illuminator of the New Age , Very Famous and Venerable Grand Master, Sovereign General Inspector of the 33rd Degree, Exalted Crowned Coptic and High Khediva Priest ; Mahatma Chandra Bala Guruji, Sri Arhat , Kalki - Avatar , Tdashi Gis Sgan Carya Rinpoche , Eminent Pope of the Spiritual Direction of the World, High Dignitary of the White Brotherhood , Most Illustrious Patron of Maha Kumbha Shanga, Paramahansa , Missionary of the Aquarian Age, the Imam Mahdi , Maitreya Buddha.

Students and dissidents

Serge Raynaud had four main students: José Manuel Estrada, David Ferriz Olivares, Gil Colmenares and Juan Victor Mejías. The first and second created dissident movements, while the third and fourth stayed in the original institution. At the moment, these dissident movements have also split, but all followers call themselves loyal supporters of Serge Raynaud's teachings.

In 2013 Luis Gonzalez Reimann carried out an examination of the pedigree of the dissident movements. José Manuel Estrada founded GFU Linha Solar in Mexico in 1967 , which produced around eight new dissident lines, primarily in Mexico. David Ferriz Olivares left the GUB and founded the Magna Fraternitas Universalis (Lima, 1990). From this line seven main branches in Peru, Venezuela and Mexico emerged.

Nowadays there is a certain amount of activity of the GUB and its dissident groups in the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, USA, Honduras, Italy, Mexico, Nicaragua , Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

Works

His 98 works have been translated into Spanish and published. The most important work of the author is: “Yug, Yoga, Yoghismo. Una Matesis de Psicologia “, which expresses the entire spectrum of yoga as a psychophysical synthesis. In another book - "El Arte de la Nueva Era" - the author comments on works of art and shows some of his own paintings.

Comments and criticism

Regarding the alleged recognition in Burma that he claims to have received from a representative of the Dalai Lama , the Dalai Lama's office stated that the Dalai Lama had no representative in Burma in 1950. In one of his letters, Serge Raynaud writes that the newspapers reported about the spiritual recognition. After extensive research, a small group of researchers into the biography and works of Serge Raynaud found that the aforementioned "Oracle Man" was actually a Buddhist monk named KAMTennissons and of Estonian origin. It follows that this monk is not a representative of the Dalai Lama, neither the previous Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso (1876–1933), nor the current Dalai Lama, Tensin Gyatso (born in 1935). In addition, Tennisons belonged to another lineage of Buddhism ( Theravada ). The line of the Dalai Lama is the Mahayana . There is neither a newspaper article nor a document by Tennissons in which he reports about a meeting with the French in Burma. This monk was not in the habit of writing articles for newspapers. Hence, the claim that KAM Tennisson recognized Serge Raynaud as a Bodhisattva or Avatar in Burma in 1950 cannot be proven.

With regard to the academic titles, there is meticulous research by Pamela Siegel in libraries and universities in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. They found no evidence of academic titles; Serge Raynaud did not have a college degree.

Although Serge Raynaud's 98 books mention interesting subjects and encompass esoteric traditions, symbolism and art, his works contain many errors and numerous plagiarisms . A striking example of this is the work "El Chamanismo". Fifty percent of the text is literally copied from the book "Le chamanisme" by the Romanian religious scholar Mircea Eliade , and in most cases he did not cite its sources.

Other authors from whom Serge Raynaud copied sections without citing the authors are: Paul Le Cour, Neher, Burckhardt, Percheron, etc. In addition, SRF copied a painting by S. Roerich and did not mention the author.

There are also a large number of errors in Serge Raynaud's theoretical statements. A striking example of this is the calculation of the entry in the new age of Aquarius. Serge Raynaud claims that he has the scientific proof: According to him, the vernal equinox should mark the “beginning” of the new age in the Aquarius constellation from 0 ° on March 21, 1948. However, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) declares that the vernal equinox is still in the constellation of Piscis . In addition to trying to justify his calculations, Serge Raynaud used some mathematical formulas from a French astronomer that have nothing to do with calculating precession because they belong to the subject of prisms .

The GUB can be defined as a New Religious Movement (NRB), although it contains elements of a messianic religion . For his followers, Serge Raynaud de la Ferrière is the Messiah, the Christ in his second coming, the avatar of the New Aquarian Age. However, ex-members and outside observers consider him to be a shrewd fraud.

There are numerous websites, blogs and groups on social networks related to Serge Raynaud and the various branches of the organization. Most of the references are in Spanish, some in English, a few in Portuguese, Italian, and French. The “Lista del Maestre” in Yahoo with 2,800 participants is the largest group online and brings together several of its supporters and supporters. The language used is Spanish.
