Sergei Dmitrijewitsch Ionow ( Russian Сергей Дмитриевич Ионов ; at the World Chess Federation FIDE Sergey Ionov; born January 7, 1962 ) is a Russian chess player and coach.

Career

Ionov was trained at the Novgorod Chess Club and at the prestigious Botvinnik School. In 1977 he won the Russian youth championship. Since 1981 he has held the title of national master.

At the Saint Petersburg City Championships in 1992 and 2003 he took second place. At the Russian individual championship in 1994 in Elista he was able to line up with the shared third place behind Pyotr Swidler and Michail Ulybin in the table. In 2001 he performed again at the same place and this time shared the 4th – 20th. Space. He won the Russian team championship three times : in 1992 with Saint Petersburg in Podolsk , in 2000 and 2001 with Lentransgas in Smolensk and Tomsk, respectively .

Ionow was named International Master by the World Chess Federation in 1990 and Grand Master in 1996. In 1998 he achieved second place behind Michail Brodsky at the 60th Hoogovens tournament (reserve group) in Wijk aan Zee with 6½ points . He then received an invitation for the B group for the coming year. He also showed himself from his best side and finished third, tied with John van der Wiel . He achieved further successes on an international level at the Petrov memorial tournament in 1998 (shared first place) and at the Chigorin memorial tournaments in 1999 and 2005 (shared third place). In 2017, he and Saint Petersburg won the senior team championship (over 50 years of age) in Limenas Chersonisou .

Ionow works as a youth coach and member of the coaching council in the Saint Petersburg Chess Federation. In the past he was in charge of Valery Salov and Evgeny Alexejew .
