Sergio Gutiérrez Ferrol (born March 5, 1989 in Alicante ) is a Spanish tennis player .
Career
Gutiérrez Ferrol played tournaments on the ITF Future Tour from 2006 . There he played long tournaments before success did not emerge until 2008, when he made it further than the quarterfinals for the first time and won the title straight away. In 2007 he won the national Spanish youth championships. In San Sebastián he also played the first tournament of the ATP Challenger Tour and reached the quarter-finals straight away. He finished the year in the top 500. In 2009 he won three futures, improving by another 150 places. In 2010 he won five futures and finished at number 262. 2011 was less successful and the Spaniard lost ground in the world rankings .
2012 turned out to be his best year to date. After making his debut on the ATP World Tour in Casablanca last year and losing at the beginning, he reached the quarter-finals in 2012 starting from qualification. There he defeated u. a. the top 100 player Rui Machado and, in the round of 16, the Tunisian Lamine Ouahab . In the following months, the Spaniard played mainly Challengers and was able to reach a few quarter-finals and the semi-finals in Madrid . He was also in the last round of qualifying at a Grand Slam tournament, the US Open , where he lost to Bobby Reynolds . At the end of the year he was ranked 178th in the ranking, his best result of the season to date. After a few tournaments in 2013, Gutiérrez Ferrol took a break from tennis and only played a few tournaments until mid-2017. The reasons for this were psychological problems with anxiety and excessive pressure to succeed. During this time he began to practice running.
Gutierrez Ferrol began playing tennis regularly again in mid-2017. He was able to quickly build on old successes. In addition to the 12 future titles he has already won, another 7 titles were added between June 2017 and June 2018, which means that he will only be able to compete at Challenger from mid-2018. In doubles he had won 6 titles by then. In July 2018 he made it to the final at the Challenger in San Benedetto , where he was still defeated by the Colombian Daniel Elahi Galán . A week later in Padua he won his first challenger against the Italian Federico Gaio in the final. As a result, he came a little later with 156 place, his career best.
