Sergio de Castro (born September 15, 1922 in Buenos Aires , Argentina , † December 31, 2012 in Paris ) was an Argentine-French painter .

Sergio de Castro is considered one of the most important representatives of abstract painting after the Second World War.

Sergio de Castro was born in Buenos Aires on September 15, 1922 to Argentinian parents of Spanish descent (from Galicia and the Basque Country ). He spent his childhood in French-speaking Switzerland from 1923 to 1932 and lived in Argentina for seven years of his youth (from 1942 to 1949). In November 1949 he moved to Paris , where he lived until his death. He became a French citizen in 1979.

Sergio de Castro originally studied architecture and music in Montevideo from 1933 to 1942 . From 1941 to 1949 he studied with Joaquín Torres García in Buenos Aires . He was assistant to Manuel de Falla from 1945 to 1946.

From 1951 de Castro worked exclusively as a freelance painter. In 1959 he was a participant in documenta 2 in Kassel . He was awarded the Hallmark Prize in New York in 1960 . In 1979 he was promoted to Chevalier and in 1997 to Officier des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .

From 1981 to 1986 he was visiting professor at the University of Strasbourg .
