Serhiy Yefremov Olexandrowytsch (born October 6 . Jul / 18th October  1876 greg. In Paltschyk , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 10. March 1939 in Vladimir , Soviet Union ) was a Ukrainian politician, literary critic , literary historian and journalist .

Life

Serhiy Yefremov was born into an Orthodox priestly family in the village of Palchyk near Katerynopil in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Cherkassy . He studied at the Kiev Theological Seminary between 1891 and 1896 and later graduated from the Law Faculty of Kiev University .

Yefremov had been a member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences since 1919 and its vice-president between 1923 and 1928.

During the pre-revolutionary period, he was repeatedly arrested by the Russian authorities for being a politically active Ukrainian and for his sharp journalistic comments in defense of Ukrainian national culture and political freedoms. In March 1917 he became a deputy of the Central Rada and in April 1917 he was elected deputy chairman of the Rada and a member of the Small Council of the Ukrainian People's Republic .

There he was Secretary General for International Affairs and a member of the Ukrainian negotiating delegation with the Provisional Government of Russia . In 1929 he was sentenced to death as the main defendant in a Soviet show trial against a so-called Union for the Liberation of Ukraine (SVU) . The sentence was then commuted to 10 years imprisonment, seven of which he was imprisoned in Yaroslavl Prison and then transferred to Vladimir Prison , where he died a few months before he was detained.
