Serpent Obscene was a Swedish death and thrash metal band from Rönninge , which was founded in 1997 and disbanded in 2006.

history

In 1993 Johan Thörngren, Nicklas Eriksson and Jonas Eriksson played in a band called Infernal Winter. In 1998 Nicklas and Jonas Eriksson founded the band Kaamos , in which Christofer Barkensjö, who would later also join Serpent Obscene, was involved as a drummer. Serpent Obscene was founded in 1997 and consisted of singer Erik "Tormentor" Sahlström, guitarists Johan Thörngren and Nicklas Eriksson and drummer Jonas Eriksson. In December of the same year, a first demo, Behold the Beginning , appeared, with an edition of 300 copies. In January 1999, a second demo followed under the name Massacre , which contained three songs. As a result, the band reached a record deal with Necropolis Records . The following year the group went to Berno Studios in Malmö in March to record their self-titled album, which was released that same year. In 2001 the drummer Eriksson left the line-up and was replaced by Christofer "Chris Piss" Barkensjö ( Repugnant , Grave ). In August 2001, the band returned to Berno Studios to record their second album Devastation . Shortly after the recordings, Barkensjö left the band, whereupon Jonas Eriksson returned to the band. In early 2003 bassist Rob Rocker left the band. Since the release of the album on Necropolis Records was a long time coming, Serpent Obscene started looking for a new label, which they found with Black Lodge Records . The recording was released in October, while Jonny Putrid joined as the new bass player. In 2005, the members returned to Berno Studios to record the next album, Chaos Reign Supreme , which was released in April 2006. The sound carrier was produced by Berno Paulsson (including Spiritual Beggars ). The band was then offered a European tour , which included 30 appearances, but declined. In the summer of 2006, the group announced its breakup.

style

Janne Stark wrote in The Heaviest Encyclopedia of Swedish Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Ever! that the band plays Thrash Metal-oriented Death Metal and described the music as a mixture of Bathory , Slayer and The Crown , which comes close to the music of Defleshed . Martin Popoff wrote in The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 4: The '00s that the band played retro thrash metal on the self-titled debut album, which is comparable to Sodom and Destruction . The music is mixed with fast death metal. Anzoni Sadoni from Metal Hammer also described the music on Devastation as Thrash Metal, mixed with Swedish Death Metal and also drew a comparison to The Crown. In his review of Chaos Reign Supreme , Björn Thorsten Jaschinski from Metal Hammer stated that the band played classic Thrash Metal of the 1980s, which resembles Sadus in terms of vocals and has a vehemence of Razor . This is comparable to Erik Sahlström's other band Maze of Torment . The music is free of old or new hardcore punk influences. In Legacy , the music on Devastation was also described as retro thrash metal, comparable to old works by Kreator and Merciless .
