Severin Kalcher

Severin Kalcher OSB (* 11. March 1855 in Saint bubbles , Empire of Austria ; † 10. April 1922 in Sankt Lambrecht , Austria ) was an Austrian Abt , among others, from 1902 until his death in 1922 as abbot of St. Lambrecht pin in Appearance occurred.

Life

Severin Kalcher was born on March 11, 1855 in the small Styrian community of Sankt Blasen into a respected farming family; his later baptismal name was Benedict. After graduating from high school , he entered St. Lambrecht Monastery , where he soon had to break off his novitiate because he was called up for military service and was involved in the occupation of Bosnia in 1878. After his return to the abbey, he began a second novitiate on December 2, 1878 and after a year took the simple religious vows . After he was ordained a priest on October 26, 1882 , he made solemn profession on February 15, 1882. Subsequently, he was active in parish pastoral care, initially as an Excurrens in his home parish of St. Blasen. He then became a chaplain in Aflenz in 1883 and in Weißkirchen in 1887 and in Mariazell in 1888 .

After he was curate in Frein for a year , he became pastor of Weißkirchen in 1892. During this time he also had the parish church rebuilt, but was elected 47th abbot of St. Lambrecht on April 29, 1902 , a few months after the previous abbot, Othmar Murnik , had passed away . At the same time he was also the seventh abbot since the abbey was re-established in 1802. About a month after his election he was appointed on May 22, 1902 in the collegiate church.

After he had been in office for almost 20 years and had proven himself to be a patron of church music in its Cecilian direction and had made a name for himself with the preservation of monuments, the establishment of a folklore museum and the organization of the scientific collection of the monastery, Severin Kalcher suffered on 2 April 1922 suffered a stroke from which he did not recover. After staying in the sick camp for around a week, he died on April 10, 1922 at the age of 67 in St. Lambrecht.

His successor as Abbot of St. Lambrecht was Wilhelm Zöhrer , who then held this office until his resignation in 1931.
