Life

Othmar Murnik was born on April 26, 1835 in Bischoflack in Oberkrain (today's Škofja Loka in Slovenia ) into a civil servant family. In 1855 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of St. Lambrecht and completed, among other things, a philosophical and theological degree in Graz . After solemn profession and ordination in 1858, he was subsequently active as a pastor in various churches. After various pastoral activities (including 13 years as chaplain in Weißkirchen in Styria ), he was most recently active as pastor in Zeutschach from 1873 to 1879 and as dean , parish vicar and superior in Mariazell from 1879 to 1888 . Immediately after his engagement at the Basilica of Mariazell , after the death of the previous abbot Norbert Zechner , he was elected the 46th abbot of St. Lambrecht on July 5, 1888. At the same time he was also the sixth abbot since the abbey was re-established in 1802. Three days after his election he was appointed on July 8, 1888 in the collegiate church.

During his time there, he made great contributions to the restoration of the parish churches of Aflenz , Veitsch and Pöllau , as well as the Witschein estate (today's Svečina in Slovenia). Furthermore, he played a significant role in the renovation of the collegiate church of St. Lambrecht, as well as the St. Peter's Church, built in 1424, which has been privately owned since the abolition of the monastery by Joseph II and served as a wooden shed. His plan to buy a new organ no longer worked. Murnik died on September 9, 1901 at the age of 66 in Sankt Lambrecht and was buried three days later in a metal coffin in St. During renovation work in 2015, in addition to the Gothic church floor and traces of the baroque altar and gallery foundations, the crypt in which Murnik was buried in a metal coffin in 1901 was also uncovered.
