Sexbierum ( West Frisian Seisbierrum ) is a place in the municipality Waadhoeke (until 2017 Franekeradeel ) in the Dutch province of Friesland . Sexbierum is located about 7 km from the administrative center of the municipality in Franeker .
The place is best known these days by its name, which seemingly combines the words sex , beer and rum . The place is first mentioned in 1322 under the name Sixtebeeren , which is probably derived from the name of the canonized Bishop of Rome Sixtus II († 258) and the Frisian word bere , which means "house".
Together with Pietersbierum, Sexbierum forms a kind of dual location, as both locations have grown together over time. In total, Sexbierum and Pietersbierum have around 660 houses with 1,740 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and around 50 businesses. There are also many associations and a library in the towns . The Aeolus Science Park aims to explain wind power to visitors.
