Lester Rallington "Shad" Collins (* 27. June 1910 in Elizabeth , New Jersey ; † 6. June 1978 in New York ) was an American jazz - trumpet player of Swing .

Shad Collins grew up as the son of a clergyman. He first played with Charlie Dixon, worked with Eddie White, Chick Webb , Don Redman and Benny Carter in the early 1930s , and from 1935 with Teddy Hill , with whom he toured England and France in 1937 (and recorded with Django Reinhardt ). In the late 1930s he was a member of Count Basie's legendary band with Lester Young , with whom the Decca recordings were made. In 1939 he played with James P. Johnson and in the 1940s he worked with Helen Humes , Sam Price , Cab Calloway , Nat King Cole , Al Sears , Eddie Heywood and Cousin Joe . In the 1950s Collins worked with Hot Lips Page , in 1954 in the Vic Dickenson Septet, and then played with Sam Taylor ; He also worked on numerous projects for Basie alumni such as "Basies Bad Boys" with Lester Young, the "Basie Reunion" and the Paul Quinichette album For Basie (1957).

Collins was also active as a composer and arranger; he composed the title "Rock-A-Bye Basie".
