Shadows Land is a Polish progressive black and death metal band from Stargard , founded in 1995.

history

The band was formed in 1995. In 1997 a first demo appeared under the name Epitaph , which was produced by Andrzej Bomba . On the second demo Smell of Pain , which was released in 1999, two new musicians can be heard: bassist Pith “Lexative” and drummer Jarosław Jabłoński aka J. Nerexo. With this new line-up, the band was seen live for the first time in 2000 at the Devil's Night Festival in Wejherowo . This was followed by further appearances in Poland, among others together with Disgorge , Sudden Death, Profanity and Requiem . In April 2002 the band went on tour with Sudden Death and Requiem. In September 2005 they went on another tour through Poland, together with Perverse, Goldenpyre and Necrose. In early 2004, the debut album Ante Christum (Natum) was released . The release took place in Poland on Empire Records , while in other parts of Europe it was distributed by Osmose Productions . In April 2006 the second album Terminus Ante Quem was available. The recordings for this had taken place in the Hertz Recording Studio , the guitarist BR acted as guest musician. Martinv from Phaeton and Kruen (Sampling) from Cruentus. Like its predecessor, it was released by Empire Records and Osmose Productions.

style

According to rockdetector.com , the band initially played very heavy Death Doom . Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia described the group's music as avant-garde black metal, with a focus on speed and aggression. On progarchives.com the songs were described as a progressive mixture of Black and Death Metal, which also had influences from industrial and also sounded very aggressive and unusual. Joel McIver, however, assigned the band in his book Extreme Metal II to Technical Death Metal , which is complex and very aggressive.

Andreas Stappert from Rock Hard wrote in his review of Ante Christum (Natum) that you can hear very strenuous Death Metal on it, whereby one tries with force to develop the genre further, whereby the songs are hardly comprehensible. However, he granted the musicians high musical abilities. But if you would like innovative yet song-oriented Death Metal from Poland, he would rather recommend Decapitated . In a later edition, Terminus Ante Quem was referred to as the "hypertechnical version" of Behemoth . The songs are annoying and fragmented by breaks and jazz passages . In addition, the music is described by some as avant-garde or progressive or liked because of its “post-apocalyptic atmosphere”. Edouard Vergriete from voicesfromthedarkside.de also reviewed the album and described the music as futuristic- sounding, experimental and original Death Metal that also made use of electronic elements. Features of the albums Thresholds by Nocturnus , Obscura by Gorguts and the futuristic sounds of Voivod are included on the album. Overall, the atmosphere of the album is eerie and dark and comparable to that of December Wolves' Blasterpiece Theater .
