Requiem is a death metal band from Siebnen , Switzerland .

history

The band was founded in 1997 by guitarists Philipp Klauser and Ralph Inderbitzin and drummer Roger Kradolfer. In 1998 Michi Kuster (vocals, bass) joined them, and a first demo with the title Prophecies of a Dark Millennium was recorded; However, this was only used for advertising purposes and was never published. The band's first appearances also took place this year.

At the beginning of 1999 Adi Fuhrer replaced Roger Kradolfer on drums. According to his own statement, the “typical Requiem sound was shaped” during this period. In the following years Requiem played a variety of shows in Europe; the band still didn't have a record deal.

The first regular release was an EP called Nameless Grave , which was released in March 2001 on the Swiss label Fastbeast Entertainment and was well received in the scene. Then the band was able to sign a record deal with Revenge Productions . On March 28, 2003, the debut album Formed at Birth was released . At this point Reto Crola had taken over the role on drums. The successfully released debut allowed the band to play at major festivals and to support the band Messiah as a support act on their tour.

At the end of 2003 Crola had to leave the band for professional reasons. His predecessor was therefore hired again as a session musician. In addition, bassist Patrick Hersche from Messiah expanded the lineup, which allowed Kuster to concentrate fully on his vocals. In the following year, after a few festival appearances and a tour, Hersche left the band for health reasons; he was replaced by Ralf Winzer.

The second album Government Denies Knowledge was recorded in 2005; Jean-Francois Dagenais from Kataklysm took over the production . Because of this, some bigger labels became aware of the band; in the end a contract with Massacre Records came about. The album was finally released on January 27, 2006 after Requiem supported Vital Remains on their European tour in the fall of 2005 .

At the end of 2006 the third album was recorded by Andy Classen in Stage One Studio and released on March 23, 2007 under the name Premier Killing League . The release was followed by a series of tours through Europe, during which Ralf Inderbitzin left the band for personal reasons. Requiem then continued as a quartet and accompanied Vader and Belphegor on their tour of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands , among others . Shortly afterwards, in August 2007, the first music video for the play Premier Killing League was presented. The video was broadcast in Switzerland by the SF2 television station.

In December 2008 the fourth album Infiltrate… Obliterate… Dominate… was recorded again by Andy Classen. Before the release, Requiem first went on a European tour with Lividity ; in addition, the band switched to the label Twilight Distribution . The album was finally released on July 31, 2009. A music video for Marked by the Signs of Chaos followed in 2010. Requiem also contributed the soundtrack to the porn film Filthy Fucking Friends # 1 , which was released in August 2009.

In February 2010 singer Kuster announced that he would leave the band after 13 years. Bassist Garcia then took over the vocals; since then the band has only consisted of three members.

The fifth studio album Within Darkened Disorder was released on May 6, 2011. The recordings took place in December 2010. Andy Classen's Stage One Studio was chosen again for this.

In the winter of 2013 the band reformed in their old line-up with singer Kuster. Matthias Schiemann joined as the second guitarist. At the end of 2016 the band will record a new album called Global Resistance Rising .

style

Requiem primarily plays uncompromising old-school death metal , which, however, is loosened up especially on the newer albums with occasional breaks, tempo variations and some quieter interludes. The basic style is most likely to be assigned to Florida Death Metal , at times Grindcore or Thrash Metal influences can also be found. The band is often compared to Malevolent Creation in reviews . Crola's variable and precise drumming as well as Garcia's guttural singing are particularly emphasized.

Up to the album Premier Killing League, the lyrics often deal with socially critical issues ("I, Terrorist", "The System Has Failed"), which is also expressed in the design of the album cover. At the same time, the band makes it clear that Requiem is not a political band. Criticism of the church (“The Great Masquerade”) also finds its way into the texts, alongside psychological topics and personal experiences.

On the fourth album Infiltrate… Obliterate… Dominate… the focus is more on mystical , historical and philosophical topics. For example, the song “Marked by the Signs of Chaos”, for which a music video was released, is about the so-called Zodiac killer . This thematic direction is also expressed in the album cover, which was drawn by Dan Seagrave and conveys a rather dark and morbid atmosphere.
