Dan Seagrave

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel "Dan" Seagrave (* 1971 ) is a British artist who has been known since the late 1980s for his paintings, which many bands from the genres of death and thrash metal used as album covers .

biography

Seagrave grew up in the area of Nottingham , the nature and landscape of which he referred to as the works of MC Escher , John Martin and William Turner as inspiration when he started out as a painter. The first release for which he contributed the cover motif was a split between the bands Lawnmower Deth and Metal Duck for the British label RKT . Subsequently, he was also responsible for the cover motifs of other releases of this label, for example for Warfares live album Deathcharge . He describes it as his first real Death Metal cover for Morbid Angels Altars of Madness . This was followed by further work for bands on the Earache Records , Nuclear Blast and Roadrunner Records labels in the early 1990s . Seagrave named the painting created during this period for the album Testimony of the Ancients by the Dutch death metal band Pestilence as his best cover. In the following years, accompanied by the loss of popularity of death metal, he appeared less often as a cover artist and devoted himself mainly to his series of paintings called Temple, linked by a background story . With the beginning of the 2000s , music albums with paintings by Seagraves appeared again more frequently. These included albums by bands for which he had already worked more than ten years earlier (e.g. Dismember , Morbid Angel, Resurrection , Suffocation ), as well as those by significantly younger bands such as Becoming the Archetype and Warbringer . While his older pictures were made exclusively using gouache , Seagrave now mainly uses acrylic paint .
