Shakawe is a place in the North West District in Botswana . Among other things, it serves as a starting point for trips to several tourist areas.

In 2011 Shakawe had 6,693 inhabitants.

Shakawe is located almost in the far northwest of the country, near the border with the Namibian Caprivi Strip , and about 200 kilometers north of the district capital Maun . Angola is around 50 kilometers away. The place is at the northern end of the Okavango Delta , the so-called Panhandle ("pan handle"), immediately west of the Okavango . The area is flat; the river bed is only slightly below the level of the place. The Tsodilo Hills are about 40 kilometers south .

The residents are mostly Hambukushu and Baherero , but also Bayeyi and San .

Economy and Infrastructure

The inhabitants live mainly from fishing and tourism.

Shakawe is located on the A35 highway , which , coming from Lake Ngami west of the Okavango, leads via Shakawe to the nearby Mohembo West border crossing to Namibia, where it merges with the C48 . Buses from Maun to Shakawe take around five hours.

The Shakawe Airport is served by charter flights, for example by the company Air Shakawe, which was founded in Shakawe 2010, 2012 but its headquarters moved to Maun. The destinations are mostly airfields in the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti .

A waterworks was founded in 1966 and the Shakawe Senior Secondary School opened in January 2013 .
