Maun is a city in northern Botswana . It is the capital of the North West District and its largest city as well as the main starting point for safaris in the Okavango Delta . It is a scattered settlement with 60,263 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011).
Cityscape
Maun does not have a city center in the strict sense of the word, and only a few large streets are paved. The center is formed on the one hand by the airport with some adjoining safari operators and cafes and on the other hand by the facilities of the Cresta Riley's Hotel with an attached workshop. The cityscape is dominated by barracks and huts, often in the traditional round construction made of clay. Since Maun also plays an important role as the junction of the road network in northern Botswana, all-terrain vehicles that can be used in the desert shape the streetscape.
geography
Maun is located on the southeast edge of the Okavango Basin. The vegetation around Maun is still predominantly determined by the Kalahari , the fertile areas of the Okavango Delta only begin a few kilometers north. Maun is separated from the delta itself by an animal barrier, as systematically built in Botswana.
The Thamalakane River flows through Maun .
Economy and Infrastructure
economy
Maun is an important trading center. As a starting point for excursions to the Okavango Delta (Moremi Wildlife Reserve) and the Chobe National Park , the city is gaining increasing tourist importance. The Maun Airport (MUB) is one of the busiest in Botswana . However, the flight movements are mainly those of small aircraft like Cessnas , which bring tourists, material and provisions into the delta. There are scheduled flights to and from Windhoek , Gaborone , Johannesburg and Cape Town .
traffic
A long, paved main road crosses almost all of Maun and is heavily used. Most of the bus routes run on this main road.
education
On the outskirts is a field station of the University of Botswana , which operates a research and science center for the Okavango Delta together with the Okavango Research Center .
