Shelter is an American horror film directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein from 2010. Julianne Moore plays the lead role, a psychiatrist who specializes in dissociative personality disorder [ sic ].
action
Dr. Cara Jessup is a single mother and an ambitious psychiatrist. Her patient Adam turns out to be a case that piques her interest. At first she suspects a dissociative disorder as he takes on one identity after another. She moves away from this after it turns out that the identities actually existed and that they were victims of ritual murders. The research for the symbol that was etched in the back of all of them led Cara to a remote forest settlement. Pastor Reverend Christian Moore lived there at the beginning of the last century. The villagers lynched him because he only gave medical treatment to his daughters. The village elder, called Granny, sucked the life energy out of his body and cursed him. From then on, his destiny was to stamp out unbelievers. Cara finds old footage of the Reverend from a historian and discovers that he looked like Adam.
In the meantime it has turned out that Adam is not the real name of the man who almost every day assumes the identity of a new crime victim, because Adam Zabor is also one of the murder victims. He had just not been found yet because he lived in seclusion. Meanwhile it becomes clear that the killer is after Cara's family as well. Her father, and finally her daughter Samantha, die of an unknown infection. Cara tries to have her daughter saved by the still living and with supernatural powers, Granny, but she refuses, because Reverend Moore is doing her best. Little Samantha had lost her faith because her father was murdered by a mugger several years ago.
Since the Reverend Moore absorbed Samantha's spirit and with it her identity, he now sees Cara as his mother. Cara plays the role-play and takes her daughter's killer in her arms. In this position, Cara manages to kill him with a stick. After that, your beloved child will come back to life, but it will not look like it always does. Sammy hums a song composed by one of the Reverend Moore's murder victims while she was still alive and which she never actually heard.
