Shiga plateau
The Shiga plateau ( Japanese 志 賀 高原 , Shiga-kōgen ) is located in the Japanese Alps in the Jōshinetsu National Park . It belongs to Yamanouchi Township , Shimotakai-gun , Nagano Prefecture . It is also one of the largest ski areas in Japan and was one of the venues for the 1998 Winter Olympics .
The ski area is at an altitude of 1,300 to 2,000 meters and is about 70 minutes by bus from Nagano . The core area consists of Sun Valley , Maruike , Hasuike and Mount Yokote with a peak height of approx. 2305 m.
history
Skiing began in the area as early as 1912. After the Second World War (1947), the first ski lifts were built by the occupying powers in the Maruike area. It was here that Chiharu Igaya , the first Asian medalist at the Winter Olympics, learned to ski.
