Shih-Ying Lee

Shih-Ying Lee ( Chinese  李詩 穎 ; born April 30, 1918 in Beijing ; † July 2, 2018 in Lincoln , Massachusetts ) was a Chinese- American inventor , engineer , physicist and known for his research and development in the field of hydrodynamics . Lee was also entrepreneurs and Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Technology Massachusetts (MIT).

Life

Lee was born and raised in Beiping, now Beijing. From 1936 he attended the local Tsinghua University where he completed his bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1940 . Lee then worked there for two years as a research fellow before he went to the United States to study in 1942. In 1945 , Lee received his doctorate from MIT to become a Doctor of Philosophy , in English-speaking countries the scientific doctorate.

Upon graduation , Lee taught engineering at MIT and was eventually promoted from research associate to full professor . After his retirement he was finally retired.

In 1985 Lee became a member of the United States National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for his basic research on the stability of proportional valves , for innovative dynamic measurement technology and for the successful commercialization of his inventions . Lee has also been granted many US patents .

Lee was also an entrepreneur and founded or co-founded a number of companies specializing in process control or hydrodynamic components. With his brother Yao-Tzu Li he founded Setra Systems Inc., of which he was chairman.
