action

The story takes place in a particularly hot summer in the 1990s in a small quiet village called Sotoba. A string of mysterious deaths begins in the village around the same time a strange family moves into the long-abandoned Kanemasa mansion. Toshio Ozaki, director of the only local hospital in Sotoba, initially suspects an epidemic. But as research shows, he finds out that the village is plagued by the undead. A young man named Natsuno Yūki, who hates village life, begins to be haunted and surrounded by death.

Characters

Natsuno Yūki / Koide ( 結 城 / 小 出 夏 野 , Yūki / Koide Natsuno )
A 15 year old boy lives and goes to school in Sotoba. He hates life in the village and prefers to go to town. Originally a city boy. Reluctantly, he moves to the village with his parents because they want the environment to change. This makes him very dismissive, which is especially evident to Megumi Shimizu, who is madly in love with him.
Toshio Ozaki ( 尾崎 敏夫 , Ozaki Toshio )
The dean of the Sotoba Hospital came back to the hospital to take his father's position when he died. Because of his loving approach to his patients, he was nicknamed Waka-sensei . Although he continued his father's business, he has an aversion to his mother and late father. He has been friends with Seishin Muroi and Mikiyasu Yasumori since childhood, but at the age of 32 he is now also a married chain smoker. His goal is to solve the case and restore security to his village.
Sunako Kirishiki ( 桐 敷 沙子 , Kirishiki Sunako )
A 13 year old girl who lives in the mansion on the hill (with her family). She has a rare genetic disease called systemic lupus erythematosus . She stays in the house during the day and only comes out at night. She and her family are fans of Seishin Muroi's essays and novels. That is the reason that brings them to Sotoba. Sunako's dislikes are people who associate their name with the cuteness suffix chan .
Seishin Muroi ( 室井 静 信 , Muroi Seishin )
Seishin is the local priest in Sotoba and the author of many novels. His latest work is Shiki . He has a sense of the supernatural and recognizes the presence of the real Shiki . He has been friends with Toshio Ozaki and Mikiyasu Yasumori since childhood. Seishin is a middle-aged man and lives alone. In the course of the plot it emerges that he attempted suicide while he was drunk while studying.
Megumi Shimizu ( 清水 恵 , Shimizu Megumi )
A 15 year old girl. She goes to the same school as Natsuno. She also hates the village and longs for city life. She is in love with Natsuno and often dreams of being with him.
