biography

Shivraj Singh Chouhan meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Shivraj Singh Chauhan was born into a farming family in central India. His parents were Prem Singh Chouhan and Sundar Bai Chouhan. He received his schooling near his birthplace. afterwards he studied at the Barkatulla University in Bhopal and obtained the degree of Master of Philosophy .

He was already politically active during his youth and was imprisoned as an opposition activist during the state of emergency from 1976–1977 . In 1977 he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist cadre organization and from 1978 to 1983 he was in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student organization of the BJP, and then from 1984 to 1991 in the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM ), the youth organization of the BJP. From 2000 to 2002 he was President of the BJYM.

In the election to the parliament of Madhya Pradesh in 1990 Chauhan was elected as a BJP candidate in constituency 234-Budhni . Then he won the Lok Sabha constituency 31-Vidisha in a by-election the following year (the first constituency winner Atal Bihari Vajpayee had returned the mandate because he had also won the constituency 20-Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh ). In the following all-Indian elections in 1996 , 1998 , 1999 and 2004 , Chauhan was able to maintain the constituency for the BJP and was active as a member of the Lok Sabha during this time. In 2005 he rose to become party president of the BJP in Madhya Pradesh.

The parliamentary election in Madhya Pradesh in 2003 was won by the BJP with a large majority (173 of 230 constituencies) and Uma Bharti (BJP) was subsequently elected Chief Minister. She resigned from this post in 2004 after a trial against her allegedly causing civil disturbance in 1994. Her successor was Babulal Gaur , who was only considered a temporary solution from the start. In 2005, the BJP leadership decided to replace the Chief Minister. There was then a small internal party rebellion in the BJP in Madhya Pradesh. The supporters of Uma Bharti wanted to re-elect her as Chief Minister, which did not meet the expectations of the BJP party leadership in Delhi. When this did not succeed, Uma Bharti and her supporters left the BJP or were expelled from the party. Babulal Gaur was urged to resign and Shivraj Singh Chauhan was elected Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh on November 29, 2005 in his place. In the elections to the parliament of Madhya Pradesh in 2008 and 2013, the BJP under the leadership of Chauhan was again the strongest force with 143 and 165 seats (out of 230), but failed to gain an absolute majority. Chauhan was then re-elected Chief Minister.

Politically, Chauhan is seen as a representative of the BJP party center. During his reign, central Hindutva goals were implemented (prohibition of slaughtering cows, laws against the conversion of Hindus to other religions, sun salutations (Surya Namaskara) in schools), on the other hand the Chief Minister also endeavored to show gestures of respect for the Muslim minority and about social balance.

In the parliamentary election in Madhya Pradesh on November 28, 2018, the BJP won 109 of the 230 constituency seats in Madhya Pradesh. The previously opposition Congress Party received 114. Four seats went to independent candidates, two to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and one to the Samajwadi Party (SP). Chauhan publicly took responsibility for the BJP's losses and resigned on December 12, 2018. His successor in the office of Chief Minister was Kamal Nath of the Congress Party on December 17, 2018 .

In March 2020 there was a government crisis. The trigger was the resignation of the MP Jyotiraditya Scindia from the Congress Party, which caused considerable unrest in the Congress Party faction in the parliament of Madhya Pradesh. In the following days, 21 other MPs left the Congress party and joined the BJP a little later, along with Scindia. The government led by Kamal Nath lost the parliamentary majority and he resigned as Chief Minister on March 20, 2020. Three days later, Shivraj Singh Chauhan was sworn in by the governor as his successor.

Private

In 1992 Chauhan married Sadhana Singh, with whom he has two sons. The eldest son, Kartikeya, was a supporter in the father's constituency in the last election in 2013. Chauhan is considered to be interested in sports ( kabaddi , cricket and volleyball ). Reading spiritual literature, debates and discussions with like-minded friends are cited as hobbies.

On July 25, 2020, Chahan was admitted to Chirayu Hospital in Bhopal after contracting COVID-19. He was the first Chief Minister in India to be diagnosed with the disease as part of the COVID-19 pandemic in India . After 11 days he was discharged home with a convalescent condition .
