Shona Rubens (born October 31, 1986 in Sydney , Australia) is a former Canadian ski racer . She was a member of the Canadian national team from 2005 to 2010 and competed in all disciplines. The six-time Canadian champion was five times in the top 20 in the World Cup and won four races in the Nor-Am Cup .

biography

Rubens grew up in Canmore and was a student at the National Sport School in Calgary . In December 2001 she first took part in FIS races and competitions in the Nor-Am Cup . In February 2002 she was able to win her first FIS race. In the 2004/05 Nor-Am season she was on the podium for the first time in the two downhill runs from Lake Louise and came second in the downhill classification. At the Junior World Championships in 2005 in Bardonecchia , Italy , her best result was sixth in the downhill.

After the good performance in the Nor-Am Cup it was included in the national team of the Canadian Ski Association in 2005 and launched from the 2005/06 season in the World Cup . In her second race, the descent from Lake Louise on December 2, 2005, she achieved 15th place with starting number 58. With 18th place in the downhill from St. Moritz on January 21st, she qualified for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . There she finished 26th downhill, in the combination she was eliminated in the first slalom run. Shortly afterwards she was fifth in the Super-G and twelfth in the downhill at the Junior World Championship in 2006 . In the Nor-Am Cup she reached four podium places this season .

In the next World Cup season her best result was 18th in the super combination of Altenmarkt-Zauchensee January 14, 2007. Other times she went into the top 30 in the Nor-Am Cup succeeded Rubens in the 2006/07 season in Giant slalom of Mont Sainte-Anne the first victory. With another five podium places she came in second place in the slalom classification, third place in the giant slalom classification and fourth in the overall ranking. At the World Championships in Åre , Sweden , she finished 18th in the downhill and 25th in the giant slalom, the slalom and the super combination, she could not finish. At the end of the season she was Canadian champion in slalom, super-G and downhill.

After a knee injury Rubens could not start the 2007/08 season until January. During the next 15 months she concentrated on the technical disciplines, but could not score in any race in the World Cup. In the Nor-Am Cup, however, she was able to continue her previous performances immediately and celebrated her second victory on March 13, 2008 in the giant slalom at Whiteface Mountain . In the 2008/09 season she won the Nakiska slalom and in Mammoth Mountain her first Super-G after the injury break. In the final ranking she was second in the giant slalom and third overall. At the Canadian Championships 2009 Rubens won the slalom for the third time in a row and won the downhill for the second time.

In the 2009/10 season Rubens started again in the World Cup in the fast disciplines, while she did not take part in any races in the Nor-Am Cup this winter. After only rarely scoring World Cup points in the first half of the season, she achieved the best World Cup result of her career on January 29, 2010 with tenth place in the Super Combined in St. Moritz . At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , she was 12th in the super combined, 21st in the downhill and 28th in the giant slalom. In April 2010 Rubens announced her retirement from ski racing.
