Shtjefën Gjeçovi
Shtjefën Konstantin Gjeçovi-Kryeziu ( Bosnian / Croatian / Serbian Stefan Gečov , born on July 12, 1874 in Janjeva ; died on October 14, 1929 in Zym west of Prizren , today's Kosovo) was a Catholic priest and Franciscan who was considered an Albanian ethnologist and Folklorist has become known.
Life
Shtjefën Gjeçovi was born in Janjeva in Kosovo , which at that time belonged to the Ottoman Empire . He obtained his education from the Franciscans in Bosnia , which at that time was under Austro-Hungarian occupation . Then Gjeçovi went in 1896 as a priest and teacher in the north of the then Ottoman Albania , including in Laç , Theth and Rubik .
In the years between 1905 and 1920 Gjeçovi collected a large number of oral traditions, tribal laws and folklore of the Albanian tribes living in the north, including the songs of the border warriors (Këngë Kreshnikësh) and the Kanun des Lekë Dukagjinit (Kanuni i Lekë Dukagjinit) , which was written by him has been fully recorded and written down for the first time. The work was published in extracts first in the journal Albania and posthumously as a book.
On October 14, 1929 Gjeçovi was shot in Zym in what was then the Kingdom of Yugoslavia .
Honors
The house in Janjeva where Shtjefën Gjeçovi was born and grew up is now a museum. Many schools in Kosovo and Albania bear Gjeçovi's name. Since 2000 there has been an annual event in Janjeva under the title In the footsteps of Gjeçovi (Gjurmë të Gjeçovit) in honor of his work. Shtjefën Gjeçovi's grave is located in Karashëngjergj near Zym and attracts many visitors every year.
