Karashëngjergj ( Albanian  also  Karashëngjergji , Serbian Карашинђерђ Karašinđerđ ) is a village in the Kosovar municipality of Prizren .

Surname

The Shën Gjergj contained in the place name is the Albanian variant of Saint George .

geography

Karashëngjergj is located around eight kilometers northwest of the city of Prizren in the Has highlands . This highland (right bank) and the plain of Prizren (left bank) are separated from each other by the White Drin .

The neighboring villages of Karashëngjergj are Zym in the northeast , Gjonaj in the southeast , Lubizhda e Hasit in the west, Dedaj in the northwest and Romaja in the north .

history

At Karashëngjergj are the ruins of a fortress, the construction of which is dated between the 9th and 11th centuries.

After the conquest of Kosovo by the Kingdom of Serbia during the First Balkan War in 1912, the Serbian government set up a military administration on site, with Karashëngjergj becoming part of the then newly created municipality of Zjum (now Zym ). In a census of 1919, 46 houses with 323 inhabitants were recorded for Karashëngjergj, of which 30 houses with 211 inhabitants were Catholic-Albanian and 16 houses with 112 inhabitants were Muslim-Albanian.

According to the 2011 census, Karashëngjergj has 1099 inhabitants, of which 1095 (99.64%) Albanians and two (0.18%) Serbs . No data are known from two other people.

729 residents (66.33%) stated to be Catholics , 366 (33.30%) are Muslims , two residents are Orthodox and no data are known for two others.
