Shyra Quontae Ely (born August 9, 1983 in Indianapolis , Indiana , United States ) is a professional basketball player. She currently plays for the Seattle Storm in the Women's National Basketball Association .

Career

College (2001 to 2005)

Ely studied at the University of Tennessee from 2001 to 2005 , where she graduated in retail and consumer science in 2005 . During her time in college, Ely also played for the University's women's basketball team, the Lady Volunteers. In her freshman season, she was in the starting line-up of the Lady Volunteers 22 times in 33 games. Her first season she finished with an average of 9.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. In her sophomore season, she was only in the starting line-up eight times, but she was still able to improve her points average to 9.8 points and her rebound average to 6.6 rebounds per game. She also scored a double-double for the first time this season . In her junior season she was in the starting line-up in almost all games, and she also received several awards this season, for example she was named Kodak All-American . In her senior season she achieved personal bests with an average of 12 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists . She finished her time with the Lady Volunteers with a total of 1,673 points and 940 rebounds.

WNBA (since 2005)

Due to her good performance for the Lady Volunteers, she was finally selected in the WNBA Draft 2005 by the San Antonio Silver Stars in the second round and in total 14th place. Ely played a total of two seasons for the Silver Stars. After a relatively good first season for the Silver Stars, in which they started eleven times in 32 games and averaged 4.5 points and 2 rebounds per game, followed by an injury that was not quite as successful. Due to the injury, she missed 18 games in the 2006 season , because she didn't get that much playing time, her points average dropped to 3.4, but she was able to increase her rebound average to 2.6. Since her contract with the Silver Stars expired after this season, she became a free agent . On April 27, 2007, the Seattle Storm Ely signed for one season. In her first season with the Storm, however, she got even less playing time than in her second season in San Antonio, so she could not connect to her previous performances. The Storm were happy with their performance, so she was signed for another season. In the 2008 season she got a little more playing time, which among other things improved her point average. Although her playing time was limited, she played an important role for the Storm as a substitute for Lauren Jackson . After a good preparation she got a lot of playing time for her circumstances at the beginning of the season. In June their playing time sank again, this was partly due to the small low of Ely and partly due to the fact that the Storm signed a player with Camille Little who plays in the same position as Ely. In July, their situation changed again, as Jackson left the team because of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . As a result, she got sometimes more than 20 minutes of playing time because of Jackson's absence. Of course, that situation changed when Jackson came back. Although the Storm had one of the strongest squads in the entire league this season, the Storm went empty-handed, so Ely could not achieve any real team success in her first four years in the WNBA. But this was Ely's last season for the Storm, as she signed with the Chicago Sky on January 12, 2009 .
