The surrogate mother is a South Korean film directed by Im Kwon-taek from the year 1987 . He is also known as The Surrogate Woman . It premiered on March 21, 1987 .

action

The central aim of the film is to show the male society by means of surrogacy , which is practiced to secure a male heir (the main reason for this is the Korean ancestor cult). However, this happens regardless of the feelings of the surrogate mother or the sterile wife.

The story is set in the late 19th century. The rich Shin and his wife cannot have offspring. Therefore, Shin's family decides to bring in a surrogate mother. The choice falls on the young Oknyo. Over time, Oknyo and Shin get used to each other, which of course does not please the sterile wife. Oknyo initially enjoys the pampering life of the rich. In doing so, however, she suppresses the fact that she is only hired as a servant. However, this takes bitter revenge after the birth. She cannot cope with the separation from her child and takes her own life.

Awards

Leading actress Kang Soo-yeon was named Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival .

In addition, the film won three awards at the 32nd Asia-Pacific Film Festival 1987: best film and best director ( Im Kwon-taek ), and best supporting actress (Pang Hui).

Sibaji was also able to win prizes in her native South Korea . At the 25th Dae Jong Award, he was awarded for the best camera (Ku Jung-mo) and the best lighting design (Kang Kwang-ho). At the 7th Film Critics Awards, the film received the prize for the best camera as well as the special prize of the jury.

Reviews

  • "In Kwon-Taek [...] narrated analytically as ever. The melodrama that lies in this story becomes the whole structure of observation." - www.jump-cut.de (Ekkehard Knörer)
  • "Im's analysis of Confucian blockages in the Korean psyche seems all too cogent. And his mastery of image, tone and rhythm is unassailable."
