action

The princess of Arkonia, Helena, is secretly at a ball in the warring neighboring state with the poet Krispín. There Krispín's pants tear during the dance and the young Franziska is ordered to have the pants repaired by the best tailor in town. Franziska does not take the trousers to Moritz 'fashion salon, however, but to her brother Simon, who also works as a tailor. Simon cuts a pant leg and makes Krispín a mockery, even if the criticism falls back on Moritz the tailor. The next morning, Simon buys some plum jam from an old market woman and tastes some bread. Seven flies settle on the mush, which the tailor kills. He sews himself a belt into which he drives seven rivets in the form of crosses and goes out into the world.

He comes to the giant mountain, where he meets two giants. One of them crushes a stone and Simon imitates it with a cheese, which even drips water from it. Simon parries a stone thrown into the nearby lake by throwing a bird into the air. Afterwards he feasts on the giants' barbecue and goes to sleep, but flees when the giants begin to hit the bed. Simon comes to Arkonia, where the citizens not only pay high taxes for the giants, but also tailor them huge clothes and prepare equally great food. An inn consists of very large pieces of furniture on which the giants should sit. Simon explains that the giants are not that big and that the citizens of the city begin to rebel. The uprising is nipped in the bud by the knight Wilhelm and the judge and the rebels are arrested. They are threatened with death on the gallows, but they are pardoned by the mild King Rudolf the Clairvoyant. He is glad that he has found his daughter, who growled and looked for shelter in a castle that was destroyed by the giants.

Like the rest of the court, the king has sunk into melancholy and also suffers from the fact that his daughter is not really enjoying life. The giants, but also a wild boar and a unicorn living in the cellars of the castle cause fear and terror among the Arkonians. The king offers half of the kingdom to those who can remove the three horrors. Simon takes on the challenge, even if he has to avoid the traps of Wilhelm and the judge. He can tame the boar and catch the unicorn, but is caught by the knight Wilhelm and pushed down the giant mountain. He sinks into the giant lake and is considered dead, but is cared for by the music seller. At court the knight and the judge vie for the hand of the princess, but in the end the knight Wilhelm manages to kidnap Helena. He drives to the giants to collect the taxes that have been hoarded there in a chest. Simon has also gone to the giants, he wants to get them to come with him to the village so that the people can see their greatness and lose their fear. At the end, the judge appears with the giants and he and the knight fight over the tax chest. Both fall to their deaths. Simon returns to town with the princess, the two giants and the tax chest and is enthusiastically received. The citizens realize that their manufactured goods are actually much too big for the really small giants, so Simon was right. After a brief irritation, the princess believes that Franziska is Simon's lover, it comes to a happy ending between Simon and Helena. Because the king tears a top, it is also very practical that Simon turns out to be a tailor.
