Siegfried Loew

Siegfried "Sigi" Löw (born April 27, 1933 in Dresden ; † June 23, 1962 at Nanga Parbat ) was a German mountaineer .

Löw spent his childhood in Dresden. He lost his father in the bombing of Dresden . His mother was considered deceased. Löw went from Dresden to Munich in 1945 , where he became interested in mountaineering as a teenager. He settled in Rosenheim . At the age of 17, Löw had already climbed various sections of the Dolomites several times . In 1958, he and Jörg Lehne , Lothar Brandler and Dietrich Hasse made the first ascent of the direct north face of the Große Zinne .

In 1962, together with Toni Kinshofer and Anderl Mannhardt, he was the first to climb the Diamir flank , which was only the second ascent of Nanga Parbat after Hermann Buhl . Löw fell fatally on the descent.

The Sigi Löw memorial expedition to Nanga Parbat was named in his honor.
