Siegfried Loewenthal (also Löwenthal; also Shaul Loewenthal ; * 1869 in Guttentag , Oppeln district ; † July 1951 in Ramot HaShavim , Israel ) was a neurologist and co-founder of medical radiation therapy .

Life

The son of a businessman and childhood friend Max Dauthendeys studied medicine in Würzburg , Berlin , Munich and Breslau . He then worked as an assistant at the mental hospitals in Breslau and Frankfurt. In 1897 the branch was established in Braunschweig , Löwenwall 23.

Loewenthal's interests and activities as a doctor went far beyond neurology. For example, he dealt with the development of X-ray depth therapy . Between 1906 and 1914 he laid the foundations for medical radium research and the introduction of radiation therapy in balneology .

During the First World War , Loewenthal again devoted himself increasingly to neurological questions. For this he was awarded the “ Iron Cross on the Black and White Ribbon” in 1918. After 1918 he was also involved in youth welfare in Braunschweig .

After a short time, Siegfried Loewenthal had gained a reputation among his Brunswick professional colleagues. As co-editor of the specialist journal "Strahlentherapie", he gained recognition beyond the city. The Berlin Radiology Society owes its creation to its initiative.

In November 1935, Siegfried Loewenthal evaded the reprisals of the National Socialists : Together with his wife Josefine (1871-1958), a sister of the painter Philipp Erlanger († 1934), daughter Lotte (1899-1958) and their sons Erich (1905-1959) and Uri (* 1934) he emigrated to Palestine . Here he suddenly continued his medical engagement and, for example, took part in the establishment of a radium therapy practice in Tel Aviv .
