Bert Bilzer

Bert Bilzer (born August 13, 1913 in Bautzen , † December 16, 1980 in Braunschweig ) was a German art historian and director of the Braunschweig Municipal Museum from 1953 to 1977 .

Life

Bilzer was the son of a hotelier and innkeeper from Stefanshöh and attended secondary school in Bischofswerda . From April 2 to September 2, 1936, he first studied theology at the University of Rostock with the aim of taking his state examination there and then taking on a pastor's office. He then changed universities and studied art history, archeology, history and prehistory at the universities in Leipzig and Breslau . After completing his doctorate , he worked as a volunteer at the Grünes Gewölbe in Dresden from 1939 to 1940 . After working as an assistant at the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in 1945 and 1946, Bilzer became custodian at the Städtisches Museum in Braunschweig in 1946 and took over its management in 1953. He shaped the development of the collection in the post-war period. Shortly before his retirement in 1977, he was able to complete the extensive renovation of the museum in 1976. Bilzer headed the cultural office of the city of Braunschweig for more than ten years.

The renowned art historian and numismatist published the “Braunschweiger Werkstücke” (series B), the “Work reports from the municipal museum” and the “Miszellen”.
