Siegfried Seifert (born February 26, 1936 in Dresden ; † July 28, 2013 in Bautzen ) was a German theologian, church archivist and historian .

Life

He came from a long-established Dresden merchant family who was bombed out in the bombing raid on February 13, 1945 and then found refuge in the statutes in the central Ore Mountains . Siegfried Seifert graduated from elementary school in the statutes and in 1950 went to high school in Marienberg, where he passed his Abitur in 1954. He then studied Protestant theology in Leipzig , where he passed the state examination and then went on to training as a vicariate. In 1962 he was at Franz Lau to Dr. theol. PhD. The subject of his doctoral thesis was the decline and resurgence of the Catholic Church in Saxony 1517–1773 and was published in 1964 in Leipzig.

His research on the Catholic Church ultimately led him to convert to Catholicism in 1963. As a result, he was unable to achieve his original professional goal of becoming a Protestant pastor. He was therefore employed by the Diocese of Meißen and entrusted with church-historical tasks in preparation for the 1000th anniversary of the diocese in 1968. From 1964 he also took over the care of the diocese archive. In 1971 he also became head of the archive and library administration of the Meissen Cathedral Monastery and the Episcopal Ordinariate. In addition, he was appointed curator of the St. Petri Cathedral Chapter in Bautzen in 1975 and in 1985 he was appointed head of the Cathedral Treasury.

When the diocese's seat was moved from Bautzen to Dresden in 1980, it went permanently to the cathedral monastery in Bautzen .

As a member of the Association of German Archivists eV (today: Association of German Archivists eV) he was from 1993 to 1997 representative of Section 3 (Church Archives) in the State Executive Committee of Saxony.

The city of Bautzen granted him honorary citizenship in 2002 .
