Salo Siegfried Translateur (born June 19, 1875 in Bad Carlsruhe , Upper Silesia , † March 1, 1944 in the Theresienstadt ghetto ) was a German composer , conductor and music publisher .
Life
His first education he received in Wroclaw , which he in 1909 at the Conservatory in Vienna in-depth. Further music studies took place in Leipzig until Translateur went to Berlin as Kapellmeister in 1909. There he founded the music publisher “Lyra” in 1911 , which was renamed “Musikverlag Lyra Translateur & Co” in 1933 after his son Hans was accepted as a partner. He published both his own works (mainly marches and waltzes ) and works by other composers.
Translateur's best-known work is the waltz Wiener Praterleben , which he composed at the age of 17 in 1892 and which became popular as a sports palace waltz in the 1920s through the Berlin six-day race and has remained to this day.
Based on the Nuremberg Laws (1935), Translateur was classified as a “Jewish mixed race”, excluded from the Reich Chamber of Music and had to liquidate the publisher as a “ non-Aryan company”.
On April 19, 1943 Translateur was deported to Theresienstadt , where he died after just under a year.
