Siegfried Wenzel

Siegfried Wenzel (born August 10, 1929 in Aue , † June 21, 2015 in Berlin ) was deputy chairman of the GDR State Planning Commission .

Life

The son from a communist family was drafted into the Reich Labor Service in 1945 at the age of 15 . He received military training there and was taken prisoner by the US in Bavaria. In August 1945 he managed to escape and return to Aue.

He started an apprenticeship as a waiter and cook. In March 1946 he joined the KPD , after the forced unification of the SPD and KPD he became a member of the SED . In the same year he was delegated by the party to study at the Workers and Peasants Faculty (ABF). After attending the preparatory college in Zwickau , he studied economics at the University of Leipzig from 1947 . From 1951 to 1955 he worked as an economist in the peasant cooperative system in Berlin and was a member of the secretariat of the central board of the Association of Mutual Farmers Aid . In 1955 he began as a clerk in the field of agriculture in the State Planning Commission (SPK), became department head, main department head and finally in 1961 deputy chairman of the SPK under Minister Karl Mewis . When he left in 1963, Wenzel was again demoted to the position of main department head. From 1967 to 1989 he again acted as deputy chairman of the SPK, this time for the area of ​​national accounts and planning coordination. After the reunification and peaceful revolution in the GDR , he worked in the Ministry of Economics under Christa Luft and Gerhard Pohl . In 1990 he was a member of the government delegation for the creation of the monetary, economic and social union with the Federal Republic of Germany . He then retired and lived on the outskirts of Berlin.

Wenzel died at the age of 85 and was buried in the Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery.
