Sijbrandus Auke "Siep" Posthumus (born April 29, 1910 in Franeker , province of Friesland ; † February 25, 1987 in Nootdorp , province of South Holland ) was a Dutch politician of the Vrijzinnig Democratische Bond (VDB) and later the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) , who was between 1965 and 1966 in the cabinet of Cals State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Water Management. He was also a member of the European Parliament from 1958 to 1965 and again between 1968 and 1971 .

Posthumus, son of a notary, attended the Higher Civic School in Harlingen from 1922 to 1928 and then studied chemistry between 1928 and 1934 at the Technical University of Delft . Among his classmates and fellow students was Herman Witte , who as a politician of the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP) was minister and mayor of Bergen op Zoom as well as of Eindhoven for several years . In the 1930s, he began his commitment to the Free Democratic Youth Organization VDJO (Vrijzinnig-Democratische Jongeren Organization) . After completing his studies, he worked from 1935 to 1943 as an assistant to the chair for inorganic chemistry at the Technical University of Delft, before he was employed as a production engineer at the Royal Delft pottery factory De Porceleyne Fles from 1944 to 1946 . He initially joined the Vrijzinnig Democratische Bond (VDB) as a member, which he joined until it merged with the Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij (SDAP) and the Christelijk Democratische Unie (CDU) to form the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) on February 6, 1946 belonged to.

After the end of the Second World War , Posthumus became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General for the first time as a candidate of the PvdA and was a member of it until May 4, 1965. During the 16th legislative period he was second secretary from July 9, 1946 to August 12, 1948 and then from August 12, 1948 to July 2, 1959, secretary of the PvdA parliamentary group in the Second Chamber. He was also a member of the Delft Municipal Council between 1947 and September 1, 1953 and then from October 14, 1954 to December 22, 1955, a member of the Rotterdam Municipal Council . Member of the European Parliament and State Secretary

During the 19th and 20th legislative periods between November 16, 1956 and September 1963, he was Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee on Transport and Water Management and, at the same time, from September 30, 1958 to May 24, 1965, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee on Nuclear Energy . At the same time, as a representative of the States General , he was a member of the European Parliament for the first time from March 19, 1958 to May 24, 1965 . He was also chairman of the PvdA Association of Rotterdam between 1959 and 1963. On April 29, 1964, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion .

On May 4, 1965, Prime Minister Jo Cals appointed him State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Water Management (Staatssecretaris van Verkeer en Waterstaat) in the latter's government and held this office until November 22, 1966. In this role, he was responsible for freight transport, responsible for international transport and energy matters. He became Commander of the Order of Orange-Nassau on December 5, 1966 .

As a representative of the PvDA, he was again a member of the Second Chamber of the States General between February 23, 1967 and May 10, 1971. During this 22nd legislative period he was from March 1, 1967 to May 10, 1971 Chairman of the Standing Committee on Nuclear Energy. At the same time, as a representative of the States General, he was again a member of the European Parliament from March 11, 1968 to September 15, 1971 .
