Mercury

The model 129 is a container feeder vessel type of Sietas in Neuenfelde . A distinction is made between types 129 and 129a within the series.

history

The series was ordered by various shipping companies in the 1980s and produced from 1985 to 1991 in a number of 16 units. At first the type 129 was mainly used on European feeder services, where it transported containers and other general cargo. The ships that have been sold now also operate in Asia and North Africa. The Christina was converted into a cattle truck in 2017 .

On June 14, 1998, the Mercury collided with the British trawler Silvery Sea about 35 nautical miles west of Esbjerg (Denmark) and pushed it underwater. All five crew members of the British ship died in the accident. The leaked Merkur was recovered by the German tug Oceanic and towed to Esbjerg.

technology

The Klenoden (type 129a)

The 103.50 meter long ships have ice-reinforced hulls and were constructed using a sectional construction . The last four manufactured units, which had been ordered by the Finnish shipping companies Engship and Langh Ship, received additional hull reinforcements, making them the highest Finnish ice class at the time . These four ships form the subtype 129a.

The type 129 has two box-shaped cargo holds with a volume of 6,820 m³. The first three ships have a capacity of 341 20-foot standard containers (TEU). In the units delivered from 1990, the capacity was increased to a maximum of 374 TEU or 168 40-foot containers (FEU) plus 38 TEU. It is also possible to transport dangerous goods containers and containers with special dimensions (30 and 45 feet) in the holds and on deck. Due to the shape of the holds, this type of ship can also be used in cellulose or parcel wood transport. The tank ceiling is reinforced for stowing heavy goods . Hydraulically operated folding hatch covers reinforced with heavy cargo were used.

The ships are driven by a diesel engine that acts on a controllable pitch propeller . Six, eight and nine-cylinder engines from the manufacturers MaK and Wärtsilä with an output of mostly 3,300  kW were installed . The docking and casting off maneuvers are supported by an electrically powered bow thruster . The Type 129 formed the basis for the development of the Type 148 and Type 151 .
