Sigismund Derleth (also Sigismund Derlett ; * May 21, 1675 in Haßfurt ; † June 11, 1752 in Heidenfeld ) was provost of the Augustinian canons in Heidenfeld from 1719 to 1752 . Before that he worked as a professor in the Benedictine monastery Theres .

Heidenfeld before Derleth

The second half of the 17th century in Heidenfeld was marked by the reconstruction of the monastery after the destruction in the Thirty Years War . After Provost Laurentius Wirsing was able to prevent the Protestant Swedes from setting fire to the monastery buildings, his successor Andreas IV. Deichmann succeeded in starting the reconstruction. However, the long war had destroyed the monastery archive.

Deichmann bought new altars for the monastery church and created a new interest book. In 1664 he received permission from the Pope that the provosts of Heidenfeld were henceforth infuled and thus were allowed to wear the same liturgical decorations as a bishop. His successor Georg Bauer completely paid off the war debts. Albert Hoch , Derleth's immediate predecessor, began renovating the monastery buildings.

Life

Early years

Sigismund Derleth was born in the Franconian city of Haßfurt. Nothing is known about the family of the future provost, they were probably respected citizens of the city. The school education of Derleth is also in the dark, perhaps he attended the Latin school in his native city. The Latin schools enabled their graduates to begin studying. Derleth went to Würzburg and studied at the University of theology and canon law.

Derleth graduated with a baccalaureate . Then he was called to the Benedictine monastery Theres , where he taught philosophy, theology and ecclesiastical law at the monastery school there. From 1712 at the latest, Sigismund Derleth became part of the convent of the Canons' Monastery in Heidenfeld. Provost Albert Hoch called him to the convent school. Here Derleth taught the novices for at least a year.

Derleth rose quickly in the monastery hierarchy, so he was elected dean in 1713 with 10 out of 19 votes . At the same time he worked as a historian for the monastery. He added the so-called Protocolla Canoniae Heidenfeldensis, which had already been created in the decades before. The historiography experienced at the beginning of the 18th century a peak in pencil Heidenfeld. Sebastian Degen also worked here in the monastery.

After a visit by the Würzburg prince-bishop Johann Philipp von Greiffenclau zu Vollraths , the incumbent provost Albert Hoch was reprimanded. In the following period the administration was divided and Sigismund Derleth rose to become the most important man after the provost. In 1719 , Hoch gave up on the provost house, which made a choice necessary. On May 8, 1719, the provost von Triefenstein , the auxiliary bishop in Würzburg and the abbot of the Würzburg St. Stephen's monastery in Heidenfeld arrived.

As provost

In the chapter house on July 11, 1719, all the Canons elected Sigismund Derleth as the new provost. After the election a pamphlet was published celebrating the new provost. In 1719 Derleth began to dig a creek bed to the dependent Ellenhof. In 1721 Derleth reported to the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg that the documents relating to the occupation of the parish of Wipfeld had been burned, so that it was no longer possible to prove whether the parish was part of the monastery at all. Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn believed the provost.

On July 14, 1723, the Würzburg master builder Balthasar Neumann stayed at the Heidenfeld Abbey. On that day, Provost Sigismund laid the foundation stone for the east wing of the complex. The buildings were renewed piece by piece in the 1720s and 1730s. On July 10, 1728, the shell was completed. In 1732 the old convent building and the refectory were put in so that a new building could be started again. In 1735 the construction of a sheep pen completed the new buildings.

Before that, between May 22 and 24, 1734, half a company of Prussians had quartered in the monastery during the War of the Polish Succession . Despite the burdens, Derleth succeeded in re-creating the old lease books and thereby establishing the rights of the monastery. In 1743 the monastery was visited again without any complaints. Provost Sigismund Derleth died on June 11th, 1752 and was buried on June 14th in the monastery church. The Jesuit Kretz gave a funeral speech.

coat of arms

The provost's coat of arms in the ballot

The provost's coat of arms has been preserved several times together with the monastery coat of arms due to the brisk construction activity on the monastery grounds. The coat of arms can be found on a portrait of Derleth from 1745 by Johannes Thalhofer as well as on the commemorative publication for the election of the provost from 1719. In 1740 the coat of arms was placed on the stucco ceiling of the ballroom. At the same time the provost received a key for the convent with the coat of arms. Description : Standing male figure with a laurel branch in his right hand and his right foot on a globe. The timing is unclear.
